 Stockton’s Joey Stearns grabbed the lead from pole sitter Trevor Schlundt. of Clovis, on lap 17 of the 50-lap Western Late Model main at Madera Speedway on Saturday evening and rolled to his second win of the season.
Dave Byrd, of Los Gatos and Jeff Belletto, of Modesto, provided some late race fireworks when the two touched on the back straight while battling for second place. Belletto was able to right his car a bit faster than Byrd to grab the runner up spot.
Track points leader Kyle Gottula, of Modesto, suffered a mechanical problem in practice and was forced to borrow a car for the main. He finished eighth, breaking his four race-winning streak.
Jeff Russell, of Boise ID, appeared to be on his way to victory in the 50-lap Supermodified race until a yellow-caution suddenly came out on lap 24. Dinuba’s Troy Regier took advantage of the restart to make some in car adjustments that allowed him to overtake Russell on lap 26.
Russell’s night got much worse when he smacked hard in the turn three wall on lap 36. With his only serious competition in the pits, Regier cruised home for the win well ahead of Bobby Dalton, of San Martin and Fresno’s Kenny White.
Other winners at Madera on Saturday included Miles Humphreys of Clovis in the Hornets, Pine Grove’s Matt Scott in the Legends, Manteca’s Marco DeGeorge in the BCRA Midgets and Howard Holden, of Clovis, in the American Stock Cars.
