ELLENSBURG, Washington – Yakima’s John Raney won his first Hobby Sportsman main event ever at the ASA sanctioned, Yakima Speedway, Saturday night. Raney, a past dirt track racer, set a goal in 2008 to win at least one main event in the highly competitive class. The likable racer accomplished that goal with a hard fought win over point’s leader Mel Patnode. The Hobby Sportsman class has always provided the fans with close competitive racing, and Saturdays’ event was no exception. Raney took over the point on lap two and did a great job of steady consistent driving to hold the lead. The pack, led by Patnode, was nipping at his heels the entire 30 race. Jerry Walker Jr., Jeff Stevenson, Randy Marshall Jr. and Don Klang changed positions almost every lap in an effort to improve their spots. In the end the margin of victory was less than a car length.

The Outlaw Street Stocks were also on the card and Gary Homad of Wenatchee was the victor. Blown tires and engines seemed to be the order of the day as early leaders faced mishaps during the 50-lap event. Young Josh Wilson ran a steady race for second place with Brian Grant finishing third.

Steve Hall won the exciting, action filled Hornet event. Sixteen cars started the A main event on the small track. A B main was run; due to the large car count and Eric coble was the victor.

Cody Mullins was victorious in the Youth Hornets with Bobby A. Trujillo thrilling the crowd for a win in the Bump to Pass class.

Next event at the speedway is set for June 28th with the return of the Late Models, Super Stocks, and both Hobby and Bump to Pass classes scheduled. Both classes of Hornets will also race for a full night of action on the one half mile oval.
