MADRID GETS 119TH WIN, BELCHER WINS #190 AT MANZANITA SAURDAY NIGHTMANZANITA SPEEDWAY

It was a big night for Madrid who won his heat race and then held off a late charge from the defending champion Ricky Thornton, Jr. scoring his fifth win of the season and he also moved into sole position of third place on the all time winner’s list. Madrid entered the night tied with Lealand McSpadden but his 119th win edged him closer to the second place driver on the list, Gene Brown who had 152 wins. Behind the front runners were Jason Noll in third ahead of Greg Bedia and Chuck Kuehl. Rounding out the top ten were Kenny Wyman, Brian Shultz, Timmy Ward, Vince Lucas and Mark Harrison. Harris started on the pole while Madrid lined up tenth for the green flag. Harrison shot to the front while Madrid wasted little time in getting toward the front. He ran nose to tail and side by side with Harrison. It appeared that there may have been contact while working the eighth lap and Harrison did a quick spin. He visited the pits and returned to the track before the green flag waved. He managed to work his way back into the top ten. Timmy Ward, the leading rookie, won the first eight lap heat race but had Thornton challenged on ever lap but had to be satisfied with a second place finish in front of Reeve Staley and Dave Dulceak. Harrison made it no contest in the second heat as he beat Kuehl, Lucas and Wyman by almost half a lap. The third heat had Madrid in the front row and at the drop of the green he started play his favorite game, "Get Gone". Behind him at the finish line were Dana Fite, Bedia, Noll and Shultz. Madrid was presented the Rick McDonald Award for outstanding contribution to racing by his Father, Windy McDonald. Funk started the Sport Modified feature in the front row, dropped back in the field and then picked his way back to the front and passed early leader Justin Thonton and led the final five laps. James Webster was third, Kerry Campbell fourth and Chris Rhien fifth. The rest of the field, in order of their finish, were Steve Bender, Robin Boomgaarden, Rick Stephenson and Tom Brogon. The 11 cars ran only one heat race and Funk came from eighth to first as he scored his third heat race win over Campbell, Webster, Boomgaarden and Thornton. Funk started off his evening with a win in the four lap trophy dash. Two time factory stock champion Bobby Taylor scored hid clean sweep with wins in the trophy dash, his heat race and then the feature. Bobby showed great patience as he methodically worked his way to he front with only a couple of laps remaining. His win propelled him into second in points as he slipped past Matt Martinez who finished 11th. Bobby Erdman, the points leader, did not finish and was awarded the 19th spot in the finish order. William McCullough, Lyle Askren, Jr., Daren Olney and Ron Poe made up the top five. Behind them were Robert Wimer, Jeremy Maggard, Bob Millan, Joe Peterson and Danny Pearson, Steve Shumaker won the first heat in front of Brent Radtke, Erdman, Maggard and Ryan Edman. The second heat went to Taylor over Askren Jr., Charles Paxson, Olney and Wimer. McCullough was best in the final heat as he beat Martinez, Pearson, Steve Carter and Aaron Oachs. Terry Belcher held off his son-in-law, Robert King, Jr. for his first win of the season in the Modlites but it marked his 190th career win . Jim Chapp was third ahead of Clayton Echols and his brother Brandon Echols. Then came Brad Hallin, Scott Korkosz, Dan Kelly, Britt Billett and Tom Kuncis. Hallin beat Korkosz, Chapp and Chris Shafer in the first six lap heat then Clayton Echols battled Dan Kelly for the win over Brandon Echols, Tom Graham and Geoff Mooney in the second heat. Jeff Czoka led all the way in taking his third win in the bombers. He easily outdistanced the field and was almost a half lap ahead of Mike Donick and Toby Webito at the checkered flag. Daniel Romero took the checked flag in second but he was disqualified after a second place finish in the feautur.Finishing behind the three front runners were Russ Odman and Bill Lewis. The top ten finishers were Terry Cox, Bear Taylor, Jesse Johnson, Aaron Oachs and Steve Carter. Johnson made a last lap surge as he took the win in the fast first heat. Johnson came on strong and nipped Webito for the win in the first heat. Czoka made easy work of the competition in the second heat as he held off Mike Bray, Russ Odman and Shultz for the win. Russ Odman ended a long layoff with a strong run for third. Race Results -- 07/12/2008
