MARK REED TAKES POLE FOR NFSWS AT PIRFeatherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring
Source: RaceScene Media
Mark Reed of Bakersfield, (Calif) after being fastest in the mornings practice backed up his time in qualifying and put the No. 04 Food 4 Less/JH Sims Trucking/Hot Tamales Chevrolet Monte Carlo on the pole for the Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring division race. Reed turned a lap of 27.789 seconds @ 129.548 mph. Garrett Evans in the #64 Leonard Evans Cars/Bettor-All Motorsports Monte Carlo, a favorite in the NASCAR Northwest Tour and a strong competitor wherever he runs was second quick, followed by Jason Fensler in the #66 Lee’s Iron and Metal/Cintas/RK Sports Monte Carlo. Fourth quick was David Stremme making his first appearance at the track in the #35 Performance Technology/Winchester Speedway Monte Carlo. Rounding out the top-five was Damon Lusk in the #40 America Online/Ritz Camera.com Monte Carlo. Kenny Shepherd who has been in a tight point battle all year with Damon Lusk qualified, 17th. But look for Shepherd to move up. Right beside Shepherd will be Scott Busby in the 18th position. He will be piloting the Ron Grose Engines/Visual Trends/B&D Concrete Monte Carlo "The car was junk this morning, but we’re getting it there. It’s still too loose but we’ll keep working with it ‘til we get it right, " said Busby. Another Northwest Tour regular, Kevin Quesnell grabbed the 6h place finish. No surprise to those in the know they run every bit as hard as their competitors, but maybe get just a little less coverage TV wise. The Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring 1999 Rookie-of-the-Year, Scott Lynch, blew a motor before qualifying. He will start in the 31st position using a provisional. It was a disappointment for this young driver as the talent and skills he has would certainly have got him a better starting position. But he is upbeat as always and that is what is leading him to be one of the fan's favorites. Said Lynch, "We had hoped to qualify with the rest, we certainly didn't think we would be relying on a provisional, but it is racing and things like this happen. We will just go out tomorrow and start from the back and do our best. We wanted the Rookie-of-the-Year Title and we are a top-ten team. We couldn't be happier. We had a bunch of wonderful guys to compete against all season. Now we are jsut able to race for fun. I can't think all the competitiors and fans enough for the great support and wonderful year I have had." Finally Darrell LaMoure who has done so much by featuring the missing loved ones of so many families in his Racing For the Missing Monte Carlo came in 21st. He had hoped to do better, but still he is in the race and that's what matters. To get that missing person on his hood out for the public to see. Tomorrow's race will be the last race of the season for the Featherlite Southwest Series, a NASCAR Touring division, as is the Winston Cup. This season we saw the most competitive drivers putting on the closest most exciting racing to be found. Why would you need Winston Cup when you can go to a Southwest Tour Race? Avoid the traffic watch the Cup on TV and let the flow of adrenaline be satisfied when the stars of the Southwest TOUR start their engines, Nov. 5 at the Phoenix International Raceway.
