PRESLEY PROVES HE'S GOT IT

TENINO, Wash. --The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge celebrated Dodge Night on Saturday at South Sound Speedway. The Late Model Super Stocks, Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks, Bumblebees and the FSCRA filled the pits with cars, crews and drivers all anxious for action.

Nick Behn began the evening with a 14.65 to qualify fastest for the Late Model Super Stocks. Bob Presley qualified second fastest, his best position all season. In the dash, Dan Obrist took the lead with Eric Tibbitts in second. The white flag was thrown with Presley squarely behind Tibbitts. As they came to turns three and four, Presley made a swift move to the outside and was battling with Presley for the second spot. At the line, Obrist was the winner with Tibbitts, Presley and Behn in tow. The first main was set with Mike Olson and Roger Drake on the front row. Five laps completed and the line up remained the same as the first lap with Olson leading over Drake, Tibbitts and Behn. Lap six brought the first caution for Bob Presley spinning in turn one. Presley missed the first yellow lap but made the second leaving him on the tail end, one lap down to the pack. The green flew and the top cars stayed in position. Presley was moving up fast though passing Jeff Walcker, Jimmy Clair, Curt Zelmer and Tim Gosch in four laps. Lap 12 brought out another caution flag for Dan Obrist who got looped in turn one. Obrist missed one lap of yellow and made the second making him in the same predicament as Presley was only a few laps earlier. Presley moved up rapidly through the field and by lap 25, he had passed everyone but Mike Olson who was leading. Presley battled Olson for two laps before getting his lap back. Presley was now in front of the leader and gaining track position and back on the lead lap.

On lap 30, Nick Behn got by Roger Drake for second. Drake, Behn and Olson were all battling for the front spot but at the line, Behn was in first with Drake and Olson behind him. Lap 32 brought out a yellow for Ray Wallace who spun and left the track. The green flew and on lap 35 the yellow flew again. This time, Eric Tibbitts and Mike Olson rubbed, cutting a tire on Tibbitts car and sending him into the wall. Tibbitts's car was towed off. The line up stood with Behn in first followed by Drake and Olson. By this time Bob Presley had moved up from last position on the track to the fourth spot. Drake dropped back rapidly going from second to fifth in three laps. This left Presley to battle with Olson for the second spot. By lap 41, Olson was third and Presley had the second spot. Drake, having major problems left the track with two flat tires on lap 44. Nick Behn won the main. Bob Presley came in second after an astonishing comeback form an early spin. Third went to Mike Olson with Tim Gosch and Jimmy Clair close behind.

The second Late Model Super Stock main event had no cautions at all. Ray Wallace started on the pole and Mike Olson followed right along with him. Olson was searching for that second ever main win but on lap 13, both Eric Tibbitts and Bob Presley passed him. Wallace had a commanding lead over the pack. When it was all over, Wallace was the winner with Drake, Behn, Presley and Tibbitts rounding out the top five.

The Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks has an interesting evening. JJ Hamilton broke the track record with a 15.85. In the dash, Chad Hinkle led from the beginning to win. The heat race was rough for all. Scott McNeil and David Patrick started on the pole. The green flag flew and coming out of turns one and two, nearly half the field tangled. Bill Posh got into Scott McNeil driving over the hood and windshield and nearly tipping over. After Posh got back on all fours, McNeil was left with major damage as well as Brad Borton who both had to exit the raceway. After a realignment, David Patrick was in first with Bill Posh in second. Posh spun on the back stretch and Patrick fell back. Kreg Kadoun took over the lead with Chad Hinkle in second. On lap four, Hinkle took the lead over and lap seven, Kadoun lost second to JJ Hamilton. After Hamilton, Kadoun dropped two more spots. Kadoun finished fifth. Hinkle was first with Hamilton, Mark Boehi and Bill Manney in tow.

Brad Borton and Kreg Kadoun started on the front row of the main event. Borton took the quick lead. On lap six, Mark Boehi took his car around in turn two and lost a lap to the field. Borton and Hinkle were running well in front of the rest of the cars. JJ Hamilton had moved into third with Bobby Micielli in fourth. By the time the white flag flew, JJ Hamilton had caught up to Borton and Hinkle. After an altercation between the three cars, leaving Brad Borton in the wall, Chad Hinkle won. In second was Bobby Micielli with Kreg Kadoun, Bill Manney, Bill Posh, and Mark Boehi in tow. Finishing one lap down in the seventh spot was Brad Borton and JJ Hamilton in eighth. David Patrick finished in ninth spot. Scott McNeil was unable to start the race due to the damage he received in the heat race.

The FSCRA brought 15 cars with them, including some of the Oregon 4-Cylinder class. Kirk Hall qualified fastest with a 15.35. Keith Van Dyne led the dash but battles hard with Mike Courage for three laps. On the last lap, Terry Rennick got past Courage but couldn't break into the lead. Van Dyne won with Rennick second and Courage third. In the B heat race, cars seemed to drop like flies. Richard Dionne, Brent Beall and Ted Mundy all dropped off the track in succeeding laps, one after another. John Grosvenor led all eight laps to win. In second was Red Van Dyne and Dan Hale was third. The A heat was much smoother with no cautions and no one dropping out. Scott Tiplady led the first lap but Terry Rennick took over and kept the lead. Rennick won with Kirk Hall in second and Tiplady in third. In the main event Ted Mundy, Mike Courage and Terry Rennick had all had turns at the lead by lap four. Rennick was the only one to hold onto it. Mundy was having problems with his car and on lap 10, took it off the track. On lap 11, Red Van Dyne took his car to the pits also. Lap 15 brought the first yellow of the race for the leader, Terry Rennick spinning in turn one.

Rennick took his car off the track. Following Rennick into the pits was Keith Van Dyne, John Grosvenor and Brent Beall. Thirteen cars started the main and now there were only seven on the track. Kirk Hall led all the way to the win after Rennick spun. In second was Scott Tiplady with Jim McKay, Mike Courage and Earl Williamson rounding out the top five.

During practice for the Bumblebees, Derek Vetter bumped into the wall causing some damage to his car and then spun in lap two a few laps later. When taking his car off the track it was making a terrible noise. Thanks to his fellow Bumblebee drivers, Vetter got his car fixed and out on the track. Josh Zahn also had troubles with his car and blew the motor before the heat races. In the main event Jim Swanson lent his Bee to Zahn. Zahn proved his driving skills when he won the main event. Seventeen cars started the main event. It was pure madness with a No Passing Zone on the back stretch and a chicane on the front. Zahn took the lead and battled with Ron Ehli for many laps until Ehli hit the cone on lap 11 and was black flagged. Zahn finished first in the main with Ken Meyer in second and Travis Major in third. Fourth went to Joyce Jasper with Mike Ebeling, Derek Vetter, Brian Wilson, Brenda Jussila and Scott Adolphsen all finishing behind her. Ron Ehli won the dash with Mark Scheffler, Freeman Pruitt and Jim Moen following. David Dix finished first in the first heat while Ehli won the second.

Coming next Saturday, the 29th of June, to South Sound Speedway is Chronicle Night at the races featuring the Can-Am Demolition Derby. The Figure-8, Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks and MMRA Super Mini-Cups and Future Stars will also be on hand. There will a Fireworks show after the races.
