DRAKE, PRESLEY WIN LATE MODEL MAIN EVENTS

TENINO, Washingon -- The points race got even tighter last night as the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, presented by Dodge, featured the Late Model Super Stocks and Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks. Chad Hinkle and JJ Hamilton are within four points of each other in the Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks heading into their last week of racing on September 7th. Nick Behn has a big lead over the Late Model Super Stocks but one mistake could get Roger Drake, Eric Tibbitts or Ray Wallace into that top spot. Joining in the points race action this weekend was the Bumblebees and Figure-8 as well as the Mini-Cups and Future Stars.

Roger Drake of Everett took his black #8 car to the fastest time for the Late Model Super Stocks with a 14.750 and Dan Obrist of Portland cruised to the dash win. Obrist started on the pole for the first main event and led for 9 laps before Jimmy McVey of Port Orchard took over. McVey led for the next 30 laps while battling to keep Bob Presley of Olympia in second. On lap 41, Presley got his nose in front of McVey at the line but McVey pulled back in front for the next two laps. Presley finally got around McVey on lap 44 and finished first. McVey was second with Nick Behn of Rochester in third and Drake in fourth. In the second main event, Eric Tibbitts of Graham pulled the pole position and got out to the lead. Roger Drake was close behind Tibbitts for 27 laps before getting the lead. Presley was running in a close second when Tim Gosch of Longview, a lapped car, hit the wall in front of him. Gosch kept going but Presley spun around causing a yellow and sending him to the back. Drake still led but Nick Behn was close behind him followed by Ray Wallace of Olympia. That's how the race ended. Drake, Behn and Wallace were the top three respectively. Tibbitts was fourth with Presley in fifth.

Chad Hinkle and JJ Hamilton, both of Rochester, tied with the fastest time in the Top Notch Trailer Street Stocks. In a situation like this, Hinkle gets the points for fast time because he qualified first. Bill Manney of Olympia ran out in front of the pack for the trophy dash win. Mark Boehi of Portland led all eight laps of the heat to win with Dan Woodward of Renton and Hinkle in tow. Jim Jussila of Centralia took the lead in the main event from the pole position. Jussila led for 17 laps before Bill Manney took over. On lap 22, Dan Woodward and Mark Boehi were running hard for the fifth position when they got together and Boehi slammed into the wall on the front stretch. He was done for the night. Manney led the remaining laps to won with Hamilton in second and Jussila in third. Joe Swanson of Gresham ran well in fourth.

Derek Vetter of Raymond kept his cone on to win his first Bumblebee trophy dash. Although the cone did tip on his hood with one lap to go, Vetter made it all the way around to win. Racing back to the line were Jimmy Moen Rochester and Tonya Hird of Olympia for second and third while Travis Major of Kent lost his cone after one lap. Brenda "Ju Ju Bee" Jussila of Centralia drove her car to a heat race win staying in the lead for all eight laps as did Jim Wyrick of Rochester in the second heat of the night. During the second heat race, Joe Swanson of Gresham and Ken Meyer of Yelm got together and careened Meyer into the wall. Meyer was fine but his car was not and he was done for the night. Swanson continued on to finish the race. In the main event, Vetter had the pole but could only hold off Tom Gonzales of Chehalis and Brian Wilson of Rochester for one lap. By lap eight, Travis Major had moved into the third spot. In the end, Gonzales, Wilson and Major were first second and third. Patrick Simmons of Rochester was fourth with Jimmy Moen in fifth. Two more cars fell victim to claim this week. Tom Gonzales and Tonya Hird had their cars claimed by some rabid Bumblebee fans. Last week, Jim Swanson's car was claimed and it was back this week with Eva Hinkle of Rochester behind the wheel.

Sean Alder of Tenino qualified fastest for the Figure-8 and won the dash and heat. John Keyzers of Shelton started on the pole for the main event but Ian Alder of Tenino got past quickly to lead the first lap. Ian Alder stayed ahead of David Tresenriter of Tenino who was running second. Mark Rogers of Olympia took his car off with a mechanical problem on lap four and Keyzers did the same on lap eight. On lap 13, Sean Alder was attempting to pass David Tresenriter when the two tried to out drive one another and in the words of Sean Alder, he "zigged when he should have zagged" and took his car into the wall. He was done for the night. Ian Alder was left to lead with Marshall Hallett of Tenino in second. On the last lap of the race, Ian Alder lost a tire off the rear of his car. This left Marshall Hallett to survive the main event and win with David Tresenriter second.

The Mini-Cups ran their NW Regionals Saturday night on the 3/8ths oval. Phillips ran in an unfamiliar #22 car when the body of his #5 was stolen from a shop. No matter the number, Phillips proved why he is the NW Regional winner. He qualified fastest with a 17.08 and won the heat race. Craig Moore ran to the dash win. Pink Smith started on the pole for the main but without even one lap complete Smith, Phillips and Chris Bell got together putting 73 year old Smith into the wall. Everyone was fine but Smith and Bell were done for the night. Phillips took his car into the pits but was back out before the green and didn't lose any laps. By lap eight Phillips had moved into the front spot with Craig Moore in second. The rest of the race ran smoothly and after 25 laps, Phillips had won with Craig Moore in second and Chris Davis in third.

Daniel Moore scored the fastest time for the Future Stars while Cody Erskine won the dash. On lap one of the heat race, Moore, Erskine and Cody Stewart got together on the back stretch knocking Moore out for the race. Steven Roberts led the first two laps before Adam Atkins took over to win. Erskine led the main event for five laps before Atkins took over. Roberts moved into second with Cody Stewart in third. That's how it finished; with Atkins, Roberts and Stewart all in a row.

Next weekend at South Sound Speedway is a Labor Day Triple Header. On Saturday August 31st the WMRA and Outlaw Compacts will be back as well as the NWSST and Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. On Sunday September 1st, the NWSST and Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks will be back again with the Bumblebees and Figure-8. Both Saturday and Sunday races begin at 6:30 pm with qualifying at 5:00 pm. On Monday September 2nd will be another exciting 300-Lap Factory Stock Enduro. Racing begins at 2:00 pm on Monday.
