THE RACE:

Phoenix International Raceway is a one-mile superspeedway with turns one and two banked 11 degrees, turns three and four banked nine degrees and two degrees of banking in the dogleg. The track has hosted the NASCAR Winston West Series for 22 races – 13 were stand-alone events and nine were combination races with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.

2002 REVIEW:
|
Eric Norris set the stage for a season-long battle for the series championship by picking up his first career Bud Pole Award in time trials. Norris led the initial laps, but Austin Cameron slipped by as the leaders made their way through lapped traffic early in the event. Cameron went on to dominate the race, leading the field to the checkered flag. Sammy Potashnick made a late-race charge to take second, followed by Norris in third.

- This event kicks off the 50th season for the West’s oldest stock car racing circuit. With a second visit to Phoenix International Raceway slated for October, it marks the first season in which the track will host two series races.
- NASCAR Winston West Series closed out its season each year from 1977 to 1984 with a visit to PIR. Between 1988 and 1996, the series participated in nine combination races with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series at the one-mile track.
- Richard Petty, with three victories, is the only driver with multiple series wins at Phoenix. He won in 1978, 1980 and 1981. Petty also has the most Bud Pole Awards for the series at PIR. He started from the pole position in 1978, 1979 and 1980. In addition, he has also led the most laps of series competition at Phoenix, leading 361 circuits around the D-shaped oval.
- Scott Gaylord has competed in the most series events at Phoenix. He raced in seven combination events and five stand-alone races. Gaylord, who won the Most Popular Driver honor for 2002, will be driving Geoff Burney’s Oliver Gravity Separators-sponsored Chevrolet again in 2003.
- Kevin Richards has experienced success at PIR, with a victory in 2000. The Spokane, Wash., competitor is the only driver with top-10 finishes in each of the past three series races at Phoenix.
- Austin Cameron is the leading money winner in series competition at Phoenix, with $42,521. His victory in last year’s event followed top-five finishes at Phoenix in 1999 and 2001.
- The NASCAR Winston West Series races at Phoenix have varied in distance. The eight annual events between 1977 and 1984 were 156 laps in length. The 1998, 2001 and 2002 races were 150 laps – while the 1999 and 2000 events were 100 laps in distance.
- With seven victories, Chevrolet has the most wins among manufacturers in series competition at Phoenix.
