Saturday Night, August 30th, at South Sound Speedway boosted the first night of a long weekend of racing action on the 3/8ths mile oval. The Outlaw Compacts and NWSST, who are running both Saturday and Sunday night, showed good car counts along with the FSCRA. The Mini-Cup Open Division and Future Star Divisions had awesome racing with lots of passes for the lead.

Bob Emerson clocked in with a 16.56 second lap to be the fastest qualifier for the Outlaw Compacts. Pete Brady powered to the front of the dash to win over Dale Roberts, Emerson and Scott Earsley. Thom VanGesen won the B heat with Lorry Safford and Bob Klos behind him. Eric Angeledes won the A heat after a last lap incident between Brady, who was leading, and Bob Emerson, who was second. Angeledes took the lead of the main event with Jim Perry in second. Perry was passed by Brady and moved into third. Then Dale Roberts made a move on Perry and took third. Roberts moved into second on lap nine. Brady, Roberts and Angeledes battled for a few laps before they fell into a groove. The groove was Roberts in first with Brady in second and Angeledes fell to fourth, giving Bob Emerson third. Emerson moved into second place on lap 16. Lapped traffic became an issue for the leader but it didnt seem to bother him at all. Roberts blasted through the 50-lap no-caution main event to win. Bob Emerson was second with Pete Brady in third. The top three were the only cars left on the lead lap. Finishing one lap down in fourth was Scott Earsley. Also one lap down was Eric Angeledes and Bob Klos who finished fifth and sixth.

Brad Stanwood took the fastest qualifier award for the NWSST but Dustin Wilkinson took the trophy dash. Twenty-Four cars qualified for the group making three heat races. Mike Crase won the C heat while George Guiberson won the B heat. The big story comes in the A heat where CJ Thom won her first ever race. She held off Brian Overturf, Chris Schlaht and Arnie Case to win the A heat. The NWSST also ran a 50-lap main event. Twenty-three cars started the race with Larry Gaylord being the only one who was unable to start. The first caution came on lap two for debris. Arnie Case had led the first lap but CJ Thom took over on the second lap. Thom held onto her position as Case fell back and Chris Schlaht moved into second. Thom held onto the lead until lap 13 when she spun bringing out the second caution. Chris Schlaht now was in the lead with Dustin Wilkinson in second and Willy Thom in third. Arnie Case was fourth. It was a very close race between the top three and when lapped traffic came into the picture it got even hairier. After battling back and forth, Willy Thom took the lead on lap 30. But Schlaht was back in front on lap 31 and Wilkinson was in second. The clump of three was fighting hard for the front spot. Willy Thom finally got to the front on lap 46. He stayed in front for the remaining five laps to win. Chris Schlaht was second and Dustin Wilkinson was third. Dave Cannon was fourth. Brian Overturf, Grant Baker, and Mike Aubrey all finished on the lead lap and were the top seven.

Kirk Hall, the FSCRA track record holder, didnt quite break the record but he was the fastest qualifier of the night. Although, after a last lap spin, he couldnt win the dash and Jim McKay came away the winner. Keith VanDyne won the B heat with Bob Gourdine in second. The A heat went to Terry Rennick with Jerry Koepping in second. Keith VanDyne took the lead in the main event. After two laps, Scott Tiplady spun bringing yellow flag. VanDyne kept the lead for only one more lap before Mike Courage got up front. VanDyne held onto second until Wayne Dillon took it on lap six. Skip Markham spun on lap seven, losing a lap but not bringing out the caution. On lap 12, Dillon slowed and took his car off the track making Kirk Hall second and Jerry Koepping third. Richard Dionne left on lap 16 and Markham left on lap 18. Markham returned five laps later only to leave again after two laps. The final caution came on lap 32 when Koepping and Bob Gourdine got together. Also being collected was Jim McKay who left the track and was unable to finish. Scott Tiplady was taken off for a leakage and Kirk Hall left the track. After 35 laps, Mike Courage was the winner with Dan Hale in second and Bob Quarterman in third. Jerry Koepping finished fourth.

Dan Larson Sr. was the fastest qualifier in the Mini-Cup Open division but it was BJ Browns night. Brown took the dash and heat race and then surpassed all the pack to win the main event. After taking the lead on lap two, Brown never looked back. Tom Phillips was not his usual speedy self and fell back into the pack from second rather quickly. Dan Larson Sr. was in second with James Sullivan in third. Daniel Moore took second on lap 20. Brown took the victory with Larson Sr. in second and Moore in third. Fourth went to Dan Larson Jr. with Tom Phillips in fifth and Terryl Dykstra in sixth. In the Future Star division, Cody Stewart took the fastest qualifying spot and Brooke Lefor won the dash. Cody Erskine took the heat race over Lefor and Stewart. After one full lap of racing in the main event, the only caution was thrown. It involved JJ Hickle, Cody Erskine and Steven Daskam who all spun and Daskam hit the wall. He was fine but unable to finish the race. Lefor led the first three laps before Steven Roberts took over. Cody Stewart moved into second and Lefor onto third with Erskine in fourth. Erskine passed Lefor for third but no one could catch Roberts. Roberts took the win with Cody Stewart, Cody Erskine, Brooke Lefor and JJ Hickle in the top five. Austin Thom was sixth with Kyle Lund and Harrison Scherer close behind.

Sunday evening, August 31st, the NWSST and Outlaw Compacts will be on hand along with the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks and Yelm National Auto Parts Bumblebees. Monday afternoon, September 1st, there will be a 300-lap Factory Stock Enduro. Next weekend at South Sound Speedway will be the Sportsman Championships with the Late Model Super Stocks, WMRA, and the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks. It will also be Copy Depot night.
