TOMPKINS AND NEW BABY SHARE VICTORYBrandon Tompkins became a first time father on August 26th to Chase Wayne. The following Sunday, August 31st, at South Sound Speedway, Chase saw his Daddy win the Hinkle Homes Pure Stock main event. Tompkins started out the night by clocking in fastest for the class. Mike Carlson won the dash in Jim Moens car. Moen was not there because he too had just become a new dad in the last few days. Justin Floreck won the B heat race with Marshall Hallett in second and Matt Wolden in third. Darold Walker won the A heat race followed by Mike Saylors and Eric Lee. Charlie Manier and Marshall Hallett started on the front row of the main event but before a lap could be completed there was a five car spin on the back stretch. Involved in the accident were Mark Rorvik, Mike Saylors, Matt Wolden, Eric Lee and Brandon Tompkins. Rorvik had to leave the track as well as Saylors. The pack was realigned to its starting positions, as it was a double file restart. Rorvik and Saylors came out to start the main before the green flag flew. Hallett jumped out to the lead with Steve Gerdts in second as Charlie Manier dropped back to sixth. Tompkins moved his way up to third by lap three and began working on Gerdts. Tompkins got by Gerdts on lap eight. Jake Petty had been in fourth but began to fall back until he left the track on lap 16.

Mike Carlson who had been running very well also left the track on lap 13.

Tompkins took the lead on lap 14 but it was short lived as they came into traffic, Hallett picked the right line and got back out ahead of Tompkins. Tompkins got around Hallett again on lap 22. A caution was thrown the next lap for fluid on the track that came from Matt Wolden. Hallett had three laps to get by Tompkins but just couldnt do it. Tompkins won the event with Hallett in second and Josh Zahn in third. Bobby Moore was fourth followed by Dan Walker, Steve Gerdts, Eric Lee, Justin Floreck, Chris Huisingh and Mark Rorvik to complete the top ten.

Mike Ebeling celebrated his 21st Birthday in style with a Yelm National Auto Parts Bumblebee heat race win. Shannon Chase was second and Gary Mitchell was third. Jeff Swanson won the second heat race followed by Randy Randall and Brian Wilson. Norm Upson won the third heat race with Nick Behn and Janice Blocker in tow. Jerry LaPlant won the trophy dash. A very sharp chicane was put in the backstretch for the main event. After two failed starts, both with huge pile-ups, the course was rethought and widened out a bit. Tony Major took the lead with Shannon Chase in second. It didnt take long for Dan Woodward to move into the front spot and he took a commanding lead over the pack. On lap four Randy Randall got the DQ flag for dumping Janice Blocker. Nick Behn moved into third on lap seven and into second on lap eight. Shannon Chase remained in third. Wayne Dillon had gotten passed Chase for third but Dillon got behind Ken Meyer and Chase was able to pass them both for third. Dan Woodward was the winner with Nick Behn and Shannon Chase in the top three trophy spots. Dillon was fourth with Tony Major in fifth and Brian Wilson in sixth. Point leader James Wyrick finished seventh followed by Jeff Swanson, Norm Upson and Josh Hoxit. Ebeling finished eleventh.

It was a big night for Bob Coffey in the Outlaw Compacts. He clocked in fastest with a 16.68 lap. It was Championship night and after Saturday night, they were down to nine cars. Patt Lucas, who was visiting from California, took the trophy dash. Bob Coffey won the heat race over Lorry Safford and Pete Brady. Eric Angeledes led the points going into the night with Jim Perry in second and Scott Earsley in third. Perry broke Saturday night and wasnt racing Sunday, Earsley broke after the heat race, and the only one close to Angeledes was Pete Brady in fourth. Jeff Long, Lorry Safford, Thom VanGesen and Pete Brady were battling side by side in two lines. Jeff Long had his nose ahead for the first four laps but then Lorry Safford led lap five before Bob Coffey got in front of them all to take the lead. Pete Brady dropped into second with Lorry Safford in third and Jeff Long in fourth. Patt Lucas left the track on lap four. Bob Coffey was the winner with Pete Brady, Lorry Safford, Eric Angeledes, Thom VanGesen and Jeff Long in tow.

Dustin Wilkinson clocked in with a 15.94 lap for the fastest qualifying spot for the NWSST. Willy Thom, who won the main event on Saturday night, took the trophy dash. Shawn Aubrey, George Guiberson and Grant Baker all won a heat race each. Curt Nusom jumped to the lead of the main event with Baker in second. Brad Stanwood moved into second on lap eight with Baker in third and Chris Schlaht in fourth. Stanwood took over the lead on lap 14. There was a caution on lap 15 for debris. CJ Thom had troubles all night with her car as well as Jody Tanner. Chris Schlaht took over second on lap 21 and Grant Baker took third on lap 24. The second caution came on lap 40 when Grant Baker spun around in turn four. The green flew and Stanwood still lead Schlaht and Wilkinson. At the last lap, nearly at the line, something broke on Stanwoods car giving the win to Schlaht and Wilkinson taking second. Stanwood finished third with Mike Aubrey in fourth and Brian Overturf in fifth.

Next weekend at South Sound Speedway, Saturday September 6th, the WMRA will have their final race at South Sound Speedway. The Sportsman will be having their Championship night.
