LOOKING BACK AT PORTLAND:
So far this year it has been the rookies who have been celebrating in
victory circle. Gaylon Stewart claimed the checkered flag at the season
opener at Evergreen Speedway. John Zaretzke made it number two out of three
for the rookies. But in a classic tortoise versus hare type story, it is the
two seasoned veterans, Garrett Evans and Gary Lewis at the top of the points
standings.
The race for the Totem Travel Rookie of the Year is shaping up to be a good
one. Just five points separate the top four contenders. Matt Kelley leads
the way with 28 points. Stewart (25), Zaretzke (24), and Steven Howard (23)
trail.
Before we close the record book on Portland Speedway, here is a look at the
record holders. Garrett Evans added to his Bud Pole record, finishing with
12 career Bud Pole Awards at Portland Speedway. Evans and Tobey Butler each
claimed five checkered flags at the historic half-mile. Pontiac and
Chevrolet each collected 12 wins at the track, Ford trailed with 11. Evans
still holds the track record he set in 1995 at 19.251 seconds (93.502 mph).
Butler holds the 125-lap race record with an average speed of 68.807 mph.
Ron Eaton holds the 150-lap race record at 73.650 mph. Eaton also
established the record as the oldest driver to win a series event at Portland
Speedway. Finally, Pete Harding holds the 200-lap event record with an
average speed of 67.796 mph.
TURNING TO YAKIMA:
Three different drivers have visited victory circle in the first three
races of the 2000 season. The 1999 season started off with seven different
race winners.
Chevrolet has dominated the racing at Yakima Speedway. The manufacturer
has claimed 15 wins, compared to Ford's 4 victories and Pontiac's 3.
Ron Eaton has the most Bud Pole Awards at Yakima Speedway with six.
Garrett Evans has six wins at the track. Eaton and Pete Harding each have
three.
The Series visits Yakima Speedway three times in 2000. The Series will
return on July 1, and on September 23 for the season finale.
STAT OF THE WEEK:
In last year's spring race, 26 of the 28 starting field were still running
at the finish.
1999 IN REVIEW:
Pete Harding continued his dominance at one of his favorite tracks.
Harding dogged race leader Ron Eaton throughout the middle portions of the
race, finally using lapped traffic to maneuver into the lead. Once past
Eaton, Harding was untouchable. Joe Constance rallied from a 13th starting
position to claim second. John Dillon was third.
