CAUTION FILLED EVENING AT SOUTH SOUND SPEEDWAY

The ASA Late Model Super Stocks debuted at South Sound Speedway on Saturday night. There were a total of 19 cars that showed up.

Michael Short didn’t make it to qualifying and Paul Blake attempted to qualify but had some mechanical problems. Nick Behn was the fastest qualifier with a 14.613. Willy Thom won the dash over Bob Presley, Tim Gosch and Behn. During a 10-minute practice session Dan Obrist hit the corner-two wall and was done for the evening. Sixteen cars ended up starting the 100-lap main event. Mike Obrist took the lead of the main event on the very first lap. Devin Eierman was second on the first lap but Bob Presley took over on lap two. Eierman held onto third until lap seven when Nick Behn took the position and Tim Gosch followed. The first caution came on lap three when Willy Thom spun.

Behn took the lead on lap 17 moving Obrist to second and Gosch to third. Presley dropped to fourth. The second yellow came for debris on the track and Tyler King and Jerrod Sessler exited the track. Another caution on lap 20 was for Troy Eaton spinning. Lap 30 brought another caution for Mike Obrist spinning. Behn was still in first with Presley in second and Gosch in third. Fluid was the cause of another yellow on lap 38. Willy Thom caused the next yellow when he spun and the following yellow was for Mike Obrist who spun. Bob Presley took the lead from Behn on lap 55. Behn stayed in second with Tim Gosch in third and Phil Willis in fourth. On lap 76, Gosch spun bringing out another caution that also involved Curtis Zelmer. The final caution came on lap 80 when Gosch spun again. Presley won the first ASA Late Model Super Stock main event of the season followed by Nick Behn and Phil Willis. Devin Eierman was fourth with Kirk Hall in fifth and Tim Gosch in sixth.

Al Carver had the fastest qualifying lap of the day for the ASA North Star Yachts and Commercial Drivers Services Sportsman with a 15.025. Jerry Clark won the heat race as well as the dash. Carver was second in the heat race with John Boyatt in third and Johnny Cook in fourth. Kelly Ensor and Dale Meredith had mechanical problems and were unable to compete in Saturday nights races. Mark Jones led the first five laps of the main event until John Boyatt took over. Johnny Cook left the track on lap six with a mechanical problem. Jones held onto second until lap 15 when Jerry Clark and Al Carver got passed him. Jim Moen also left the track on lap 12 with an oil leak. On lap 18 Jerry Clark spun and lost four positions. John Boyatt won the main event followed by Al Carver, Mark Jones, Brandon Finch and Jerry Clark.

Dan Woodward did a complete sweep in the ASA Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks. He qualified fastest with a 15.618 and also won the trophy dash. Woodward also won the A heat race with Bill Manney in second and Bobby Micielli in third. Josh Bradley won the B heat followed closely by Buck Bourne, Greg Kinney and David Kirkman. The 25 lap main event was peppered with disappointment. Ron Ehli, Leon Ames, Mike Brooks and Paul Hopkins and Ken Carver were unable to make it to the main event. Bill Manney took the lead with Bobby Micielli in second. On lap four Micielli blew his rear end and spun him around. A fire started but was quickly extinguished by the safety crew. Micielli was fine but done for the night. The incident put Dan Woodward into second behind Manney. On lap seven Bill Posh blew his motor in a huge display of smoke. Soon Woodward moved into first with Manney in second and Wilkinson in third. Wilkinson quickly moved into second. Woodward won the main event followed by Wilkinson and Manney. Jay Hopkins finished fourth with David Kirkman in fifth and Joe Marcy in sixth. Greg Kinney finished seventh.

Bobby Moore was the fastest Hinkle Homes Pure Stock qualifier with a 17.073. David Tresenriter won the trophy dash. Scott Johnson won the B heat after Lloyd Bonar led the first three laps. Tim Vermillion was second with Zach Franklin in third. Mike Carlson won the A heat with Steve Woods and Marshall Hallett in tow. Before a lap was complete in the main event Zach Franklin lost control of his car an over corrected and went straight into the backstretch wall. Pieces flew off his car but Franklin was okay. Kory Kugan left the track during this time. Steve Woods spun after one lap but continued in the race. Mike Carlson took the lead on lap three with Amanda Easley in second and Marshall Hallett in third. On lap six Amanda Easley broke a rear shock and spun but stayed on the lead lap. She went to the back without losing a lap. Carlson still led with Hallett in second and Steve Gerdts in third. Lap 12 brought another caution when Lloyd Bonar spun. Lap 17 was another caution when David Tresenriter spun Steve Gerdts. Tresenriter lost a lap in the incident.

While the green was about to be thrown Eric Lee got into the back of Lloyd Bonar and got hooked together. They broke free and continued to race. Mike Carlson was the third winner of a Hinkle Homes Pure Stock main event in as many races. Marshall Hallett was second with Steve Woods in third. Bobby Moore was fourth and Amanda Easley finished fifth.
