TRACY, California -- The heat is rising at Altamont Motorsports Park with only two ACDelco Late Model events to complete this season. New leaders are emerging and racing is becoming very exciting. Rookie Rudy Marquez is showing that his transition from Mini Super Trucks is finally starting to pay off as he made it from a sixth place start to take the lead from Kenny King of Pleasanton in four laps. Marquez held on for the next twenty of this thirty lap event. Jason Gilbert also from Pleasanton dogged Marquez every lap that they ran, and finally took the lead with only a few laps to go. He was then the man to beat. It was his race to win and the challenges began. In five laps, quick time David Hulsey, points leader Todd Bammer and Brian Koski passed Marquez and filled the second, third and fourth positions, but didn't give Gilbert much trouble. Marquez very respectively rounded out the top five.

The Groth Bros. Chevrolet Baby Grands had Tracy's Jeremy Wood return to form and take the win tonight. Tracy residents are dominating this division. Mike Conti started on the pole and got booted to the infield. Dave Tyler took the lead with Wood in the hunt. About midway, Wood became the hunted and Tyler was chasing him. Rick Ruzbarsky who had been sent to the rear worked to the front and got around everyone but Wood to claim second. Tyler finished third with Dave Figuerrido, Sr. coming in fourth, and Conti finished fifth even after getting the boot at the beginning.

Northern California Modified Association brought open wheel excitement tonight as Patterson's Don Hicks claimed his second consecutive win. Hicks got helped into the wall during his heat and looked like he was done for the night. But there's a reason he's called "Dr." Don and that says it all. As the norm goes with this group, everyone pitches in and gets a racer back on track. By the Trophy Dash, Hicks was on track and took the win. The main event had Hicks starting sixth and maneuvering around the sprinters in front of him to claim the lead by lap five. Asphalt points leader Pat Ariaz of Manteca tucked right in behind him and finished second. Tracy's John Silva was running third but had an unfortunate incident busted his crank shaft and was done. Ed Amador, Modesto's "Racing Farmer" and combined points leader started in the rear because of an earlier problem that took everyone six hours to get him back in the running, finished a well earned third. Jeff Kendt from Antioch made his first appearance with NCMA and on asphalt to finish fourth. Bert Siverling was fifth.

Mini Cup Jr. Star of the evening was Livermore's Scott Chapeta. Chapeta took the Trophy Dash and ran wire to wire to win the main event. These young racers ran their entire main with no cautions. A little spot swapping and good clean racing brought Dominic "Big D" Portera from Morgan Hill in second. Series point's leader Doff Cooksey was third. Jacob Gomes held down fourth and Chris Oliveria of Danville was fifth.

Mini Super Trucks had Hayward's Walt Bruegger achieve his first win of the season tonight. Bruegger fought his way from a fourth place start to the front. Tracy's David Burchett came from even further back and finished second, with Ron Pestana finishing right behind him in third. Tom Moss from Redwood City had fast time this evening and was fourth. San Lorenzo's Tim Cardoza had a great run and rounded out the top five.

Last but never least the Super Stocks were really super! Redwood City's Carl Edberg was last man running and got by everyone to have the lead by lap ten of this Main. Seemed that all the back came to the front. Mark Squadrito was mid pack and came to second. Chris Bammer celebrated his birthday by taking third. Roger Medina still showing his mettle came in fourth and Series point's leader Matt Erickson brought it home in fifth. Zach Huffman of Tracy returned to racing tonight after doing a 14-month stint in Iraq. He stated," This was all I thought about while I was there." He won his heat race in his first outing in more than a year.

This was a real interesting evening as all of the main events were run with no caution lights working. Track officials stood in their respective corners and brought out the yellow flags when necessary. Drivers' reacted well and it worked just like old time racing on Saturday Night!

Altamont Motorsports Park will be dark next weekend so you may enjoy the holiday with your family but will host great Saturday night racing September 11, 2004 when the AC Delco Late Models, CASA Sprint Cars, and Spec Motor Modifieds return to the "Fastest Half Mile in the West". Super Stock, Mini Super Trucks and Mini Cup Jr. Stars race on the quick quarter mile.####
