May 27, 2000 – Mesa Marin Raceway – Jon Campbell of Laguna Hills will remember Memorial Day as the night he made it two for two at Mesa Marin Raceway. Campbell started on the pole of the Memorial Day "Pepsi 150" and never gave up the position. "This was our first win after trying many, many times," said Campbell. His crew agreed it was the sweetest night of all, especially with the scare going into the mandatory yellow at Lap 75. The #25 died and had to be pushed into the pits. "We got low on gas and the fuel cell doesn’t operate as well when it gets low, but the crew did a great job, identified the problem and we got back out there in time to take the lead and win. What a night!" Earlier in the evening, Campbell also won the four lap trophy dash. Joe Bean set fast time for the night followed by Jeremy Salamacha, Campbell, and Jarit Johnson. With Campbell out front all 150 laps, the action was for 2nd and 3rd place most of the evening. Dan Moore, Dave Blankenship, and Vince Little, and Salamacha traded places looking for track position during the first 75. Salamacha’s bid end on lap 56 when coming out of turn 2 he hit the back wall. In the last 75 Moore held onto 2nd until lap 132 when Mike David got by him. Moore was able to get the 2nd place back, but by the end of the race David got by him again and took Bill Helgeson with him. Moore settled for 4th followed by Vince Little and Dave Blankenship. Curtis Malins won the Timberwolf Hard Charger Award gaining 11 positions during the event. In Modified Stocks, Brian Richardson made it two-for-two controlling the lead over Gene Fife for most the the 30-lap event. Fife chased him hard, but Richardson held his line for his 2nd career victory. Fife was followed by Danny Collins, Kevin Sevinich, and Vic Posey. The Women’s Series debuted with Tammy Hacker of Pepsi setting fast time in the Time Warner Cable #00. During the main, however, it was Dawn Sevenich, who was able to go to the front and stay there for the win, followed by Michelle Kelley, Phyllis Tibbetts, Carol Jordan and Debbie Gonzales. Sevenich also won the trophy dash. In the 911 Race for Youth, Bryan Hill won again for the Bakersfield Police Department. He was followed by D. Bryan, Bakersfield Fire Dept., Ken Taylor, K.C. Superintendent of Schools, Brent McElmurry, CHP, Tom Maple, DA’s Office, Eng. Putnam, K.C. Fire Dept., Jeff Fahsbender, K.C. Sheriff and Matt Pontes, K.C. Park Rangers.
