LATE BARSNESS FLAT HANDS WIN TO MAESTAS

Casa Grande, AZ --

Taking advantage of a flat right front tire for runaway race leader Brian Barsness, Rick Maestas led the final 3 laps to win the 15 lap factory stock main event Sunday afternoon as Central Arizona Raceway closed it's three weekend Winter Speedweeks. Maestas won $200 and Rocky Tipton finished second ahead of veteran Roger Lundy. Barsness had won his heat and climbed from 8th starting to the lead in just 3 laps of the 15 lapper. He could only manage a 7th place feature finish after limping those final 3 laps with the flat tire.

The 16 factory stocks were split into three heat races. Barsness won heat 1 from third starting with Jerry Martzell second. James West won heat 2 over Tipton and Robert Goldkuhl. After R Lundy spun leading on the first lap, Maestas won heat 3 over visitor Tom Burlington and Larry Mason. The top 9 from the heat action drew for their starting order in the 15 lapper with Mason and Burlington drawing the front row, Maestas starting fifth and Barsness 8th. Tipton started 3rd and led the first 2 laps with West losing ground with a spin. Barsness was third on the first lap, took second from Maestas on lap 2 and drove underneath Tipton coming off turn 4 for the top spot on lap 3. Maestas took second from Tipton on lap 4 and Pinetop visitor Kevin Brackey was out on lap 5. Martzell worked his way into fourth on lap 7, but ran off the top of the track in turn 4 on lap 12 and fell back. Barsness saw his great day sour as his right front tire went flat on lap 13 and he quickly dropped out of the top five. Bob Sacco was also a late dropout as Maestas led those final 3 laps for the win over Tipton, R Lundy, Deon Cook, Martzell, Matt Lundy, Barsness and West. The 15 lapper was run without a caution flag.

The track's regular season will open the final weekend of March, but a big Monster Truck show is scheduled for Saturday night, Feb 17.
