Imperial, CA --
Josh Wood outran Las Vegas long tow Mark Allison in both his heat race and the IMCA Modified main event as Imperial Valley Speedway closed it’s 2000-2001 season Saturday night. It was Wood’s second win of the season and paid $600 with Allison a $400 second as Eric Evans ran a $250 third. Doug Peterson from Yuma closed his track championship season with a $150 fourth. Yuma’s David White was a $300 winner in the Pro Stock main event with Steven Daffern second. Track champion Tony Lentz settled for a fourth in the finale. White also preceeded his main event win with a heat race victory. The factory stock feature win also went back to Yuma, AZ as Dave Amos was able to snap the two race winning streak of Tom Harrison. Amos won $200 with Harrison a $150 second ahead of Marv Evans. The 3/8 mile clay oval had sat idle for several seasons before the fair board elected to promote it’s own action in the winter months of 2000-2001. They intend to reopen for another winter of racing in October as the summer months are just too hot in California’s lower desert.
The IMCA Modifieds had a 15 car turnout, but both Scott Jeffery and Charlie Armstrong were done early in the night to leave a 13 car main event. Wood and Allison ran 1-2 in the first heat where Duane Rogers ran third. E Evans took heat 2 ahead of Bill Miller. In the 20 lap main event, it was Wood and Allison again 1-2 as E Evans ran third over Peterson, Brent Geary, Rogers, Miller and Robert Mattson. After all the other Western Region Saturday night options cancelled, defending California State champion Bill Saltzman towed to Imperial and he ran 9th.
There were 8 Pro Stocks and they were split into a pair of heat races. White won the first over Tommy Pulda Jr with previous race winner Steven Daffern the second heat winner ahead of Mike Lerwill. The battle for the main event win was between the two heat winners with White winning over Daffern, Aaron Mari, Lentz, Lerwill and Brenda Woolen. The factory stocks had 9 entries and were the class given the dash in the season finale. M Evans won the dash over Tommy Daffern. After breaking in the dash, Steven McCollough Jr sat out the heat race, but returned for their main event. M Evans also won his heat with T Daffern second. Harrison and Amos were 1-2 in the second heat race. Amos turned the tables on Harrison in the main event with M Evans ending his strong night with a $125 third ahead of Rusty Johnson, Adolfo Noriega and James Tucker.
