Ed Beebe was able to outrun track dominator and defending division champion Norman Uptain Sr in the Grand American Modified feature race Saturday night as Thunder Raceway opened it's 2001 season. In recent years, Uptain Sr has raced in both the modified and late model classes at the track, but has cut back to just the modified action in 2001. Jeff Anderson won the late model feature over Tim Thomas. Defending track champion Charlotte Williams won the Pro Stock main event ahead of Don Earven and Loren Hunt. Randy Anderson beat back an 18 car field in the dwarf car season opener.
The Budweiser sponsored Grand American Modifieds found a 9 car feature field with Beebe winning over Uptain Sr, Jack Moore, Norman Uptain Jr, Dan Radcliff, Rod Wright and Justin Randall. Dwarf car feature winner Randy Anderson was 8th in the modified main event. J Anderson paced a four car late model feature over Thomas, Kyle Nace and Vanessa Currell. There were 13 Pro Stocks in action on opening night and Williams won ahead of Hunt, Ron Butler, John James, Buddy Burnett, Sam Padgett and Greg Keiser. The dwarf car main went to R Anderson ahead of Craig Click, Brandy Phillips, Larry Stewart, Marty Weston, Chester Villella, Jim Davis and Storm Phillips.
