Las Cruces, NM --

Defending track champion Scott Logston won the modified main event at The Speedway of Southern New Mexico Saturday night. Logston is driving an experimental Lightning Chassis built by local car builder and track co-promoter Jimmy Ray in the 2001 season and he stands sixth in the tight six way battle for the track championship. Royal Jones was second in the main event with point leader Terry Tipton from Duncan, AZ finishing third. Double division racer Christy Georges won the Super Stock feature ahead of point leader and defending champion Mark Morris. The No Bull $500 contest went unpaid as Georges only races at the track on the modified race nights. Justin Ligon continued his climb back into track championship contention by winning the street stock feature ahead of Gene Alley. Ligon is 3rd in points, 8 back of point leader Miles Widmer, who ran 7th. The Super Truck action saw the return of Rex Porter and he won the main event ahead of Jimmy Dick.

The Las Cruces clay oval has a large and very competitive modified field as over 30 cars were on hand to vie for the 25 A main starting slots. Heat winners were Lorne Wofford, Tipton, Pat Carney and Anton Salopek. Georges ran second behind Wofford in her heat, then took dash honors over Carney and Tipton, who wheels a Ford powered D&M Speed Equipment Chassis. The six legitimate track championship contenders all finished in the first 7 slots tonight as Logston won the main event ahead of R Jones, Tipton, Jimmy Ray, Wofford, Curt Barnett and Carney. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Greg Pratt Jr, Billy Roy Harris and Georges. In the point title fight, Tipton leads the tied duo of Wofford and Carney by 3 points with C Barnett and R Jones tied for fourth 3 more points back. Even sixth ranked Logston is only 8 points out of the lead.

Richard Wilbee returned to action and won the first Super Stock heat race over Frank DeMartino. Ivan Burton beat car builder Martin Robinson in heat 2 and Burton also took dash honors ahead of F DeMartino and Wilbee. Georges ran third in her heat while Morris had problems early in the night. Georges then won the main event in her Barnett's Harley Davidson sponsored mount ahead of Morris, F DeMartino, Sherman Barnett, Fito Gallardo, Robinson, Eric Luchini, Paul Ziehl and Victor Colorbio Jr. The consistent Morris is headed for another track title as he has already built a 29 point lead over Robinson, who is 3 points ahead of Burton. F DeMartino has moved into fourth in points, but stands 73 behind Morris.

Doug Roberts won the first street stock heat race ahead of Mike Rosales. Point leader Widmer won heat 2 with rookie Charlie Morris second. Rosales was the dash winner ahead of Widmer and Roberts. In the feature, Ligon and Alley returned to the domination that they showed in the 2000 season with a 1-2 finish. Dustin Smith was third over Rosales, Morris, Russell Allen, Widmer and Roberts. Widmer's point lead is now 6 points over Morris. Ligon is just 8 points back of the leader and Rosales is fourth in points, 17 behind first. Smith has climbed into the top five.

The Super Trucks had one of their larger turnouts of the young season with 7 in action. Dick beat Claude Lenderman in the heat, but Lenderman took dash honors ahead of Dirk Squibb. Porter won the main event with Dick second ahead of Lenderman, Squibb, Cheryl Fox, Critt Coburn and Coree Fox.
