Victorville, CA --
Driving a perfect race, San Diego's John Linn fought off the challenges of Las Vegas ace Mark Allison to win the 20 lap IMCA Modified main event at Route 66 Raceway Saturday night. The finish gave Allison one win and two seconds in his three starts, leaving him wishing that he had run the season opener as he stands 30 points back of point leader Jimmy Barttelt. Danny Queener missed the super street stock heat race, but his point average put him on the pole for the main event that he won with Chris Smith second ahead of point leader Jay Ownbey. Another huge field of street stocks saw the top two finishers in the main event both have to come through the B Main. Point leader Randy Vogel won with point runnerup Mark Forbes in second. Robby Cockrell also continues to make up ground lost by missing opening day as he won the Mini Stock feature over Mike Gibson and point leader Mark Nustad. Rob MacDonald came from the 8th row to win the All American Stock feature over Mark Bandelin and Mike Olson. The SCDCA dwarf cars were on hand and El Cajon's Bob Brown won ahead of Gary Barber.
The IMCA Modifieds had a season low 9 cars in action, but the feature had extense action with Western Region title hopeful providing a race long challenge to winner Linn. Al Bernal again impressed with a third place finish over point leader Barttelt, Brad Bennett and Kevin Hocking. Barttelt holds a 10 point lead over Hocking with Wayne Francis falling 13 points back following his last place run. Francis is just a single point ahead of Bernal and two ahead of Bennett. There were 15 Super Streets and the heat wins went to C Smith and Tom Wesolowski. Queener still claimed his pole based on a low point average and he won the main event ahead of C Smith, point leader Ownbey, Ralph Cooke, Roger Funkhouser and Melodie Smith. Mike Morris started the night just one point behind Ownbey, but placed 11th in the main and fell to third in points behind C Smith, who remained 13 points back of Ownbey. Nearly 40 street stocks came through the pit gate. Heat winners were Jimmy George, Mike Milender, Keith Prischmann and newcomer Mike Sabers. Top runners like Vogel, Forbes, Robbie Hart and visitor Frank Woodward all had to battle through the B Main with another strong runner Robert Mooers just missing a transfer. Vogel came from 11th starting to then win the A Main over 14th starter Forbes, seventh starter Joshua Owen and ninth starter George. Woodward ran fifth over Jim Rook, Scott Curry and Robert Schuster. Rook cut Curry's point lead to 18 points.
The mini stock field of 13 cars saw heat wins going to Kevin Holden and Andy Moreton. Cockrell ran second in his heat, then came from the sixth row to win the main event in front of third starting Gibson, sixth row starter Nustad, Bill Watson, Jimmy Helton, Holden and Gary Marshall. Cockrell started the night 44 points behind Nustad, but cut the margin to 38 with his strong performance. He is just 8 points behind runnerup Holden. The American Stocks had a 20 car turnout and heat wins went to Jim Cox, Bandelin and Howard Smith. MacDonald had run second in his heat and he came from 16th starting to win the main event ahead of Bandelin, Miek Olson, Brandon Bennett, Cox and David Anderson. The absence of incoming point leader David Lord allowed Bennett to take over the top spot by 27 points over Cox. Bandelin started in the front row with Olson coming from 11th. There were 10 dwarf cars and Tom Eaton Jr beat feature winner Brown in the heat action with Mike Atteberry third. Tom Major was unable to start the main event after placing sixth in the heat and Brown won from fifth starting ahead of pole starter Barber, sixth starter Eaton, fourth starter Atteberry and 3rd starter Larry Wormsbecker. Coming off a recent Perris Auto Speedway win, Danny Arant ran 6th ahead of Barto Bartolacci.
