RICKY HOOD REBOUNDS WITH LAS CRUCES WIN

After settling for a second place finish behind local favorite Rick Ziehl the previous night in Tularosa, defending SCOA Winged 410 sprint car champion Ricky Hood was back in the winner's circle at The Speedway of Southern New Mexico. Unsung Mike Wells also had a great weekend as he ran second behind Hood on Saturday night following a fifth place run on Friday night. Las Cruces' own Danny Williams was third over R Ziehl and Marty Wilcox at Las Cruces.

Following his Friday night win, R Ziehl had fast time honors on the 3/8 mile Las Cruces track. Friday night fast timer Mike Archuleta from El Paso was the dash winner on Saturday over Hood and Jeff Branaman. The 26 cars were split into three heat races. Mike Ziehl won the first heat over Steve Cushman, Wilcox beat female ace Kaylene Verville in heat 2 and Jimmy Norman beat Mike Wells in heat 3. Even though they ended up starting everyone in the A Main, they still ran a full B Main which was won by Sonny Holden over Scott Box, Steve Stone and Jerrel Slinkard. Hood, Wells and Williams were trailed in the A Main finish by R Ziehl, Wilcox, Jeff Slinkard, Jerrel Slinkard, Robert Hall and Norman. After the first five events on the schedule, Hood holds an 85 point lead over Wilcox. Branaman is 24 points back of Wilcox and 22 ahead of Jeff Slinkard. Norman rounds out the top five in points. Next action is June 23 at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande.
