Madera, CA --
NASCAR Pacific Coast Regional point leader Mark Welch and six time track champion Richard Herzog shared the wins in the twin 30 lap features for the NASCAR Grand American Modifieds Saturday night at Madera Speedway. For Welch, it was the 4th win in the 10 events held to date in 2001 while R Herzog snapped a year long winless streak that had seen him second in the last three races. Bobby Hurst won the 25 lap street stock feature in wire to wire fashion for his 3rd win. He gained ground on point leader Marc Utheim, who was fifth. Despite starting last after his fast time effort, Super Toyota point leader Randy Manser won their main event by a half-lap over Mark Hertzog. David Lander won his second straight Toyota Sedan feature for the second time in the 2001 season after a three wide pass of John Bray Jr with 8 laps to run. Jimmy Reeves won the 25 lap Pure stock main event.
The Grand American Modified class continues to have top cars visiting each race with Northern California aces Denny Cashada, Scott Feil and Hap Ferree joining the action this week. Bryan Herzog turned fast time over the 20 car field with his 15.33 lap. Many time Ukiah champion Cashada was second at 15.37 and Bobby Hogge IV made his Madera modified debut with a 15.41 lap in the JDK Racing GRT. Barry Callouette turned a 15.45, Welch a 15.47 and Bob Reichmuth a 15.51. Welch won the first 30 lap feature, taking the lead on the first restart when leader B Herzog elected to start on the outside. Welch ran unchallenged to the victory with his Ellis chassis. Cashada ran second with Welch's teammate Gary Glenn third ahead of R Herzog, Reichmuth, Feil, Dawn Swanson and Joel Thiesen. The second 30 lapper had 18 starters as both D Swanson and B Herzog scratched. R Herzog appeared to be headed to another second place finish as he trailed Reichmuth with just a couple laps to run. R Herzog moved into the outside groove and staged a two lap side by side shootout with Reichmuth. R Herzog won by three feet over Reichmuth with Hogge a solid third. Cashada was fourth over Feil, Randy Nason, John Mello, Ferree, John Dalerio and Glenn. Welch was 12th.
The street stocks had a ten car turnout. Randy Reeves won the first heat over Howard Holden. Justin Westmoreland wheeled his Ford to victory in heat 2 over point leader Marc Utheim. Hurst ran last in his heat, but led all 25 laps of the main event to win for the third time in 2001. Reeves ran second over Mark Tustin, Doc Bryan and Utheim, who started last. Westmoreland was sixth over Britt Wasson and Jamie McLaren as Holden was a scratch. Manser paced the 10 Super Toyotas in time trials with his 16.64 lap
on the 1/3 mile paved oval. Kevin Thompson ran a 16.71, Chris Lewis a 16.80 and Mike Burgess a 16.88. Manser started last in the feature, but quickly got to the front and won by 1/2 lap over Mark Hertzog. Doug Bridger was right behind Hertzog and Kris Terris ran fourth over Jerry D'Ambrosi, Ron Martinez and James Donaldson. Donaldson had to be transported to the hospital with an ankle injury after a hard crash into the front wall.
Shannon Kawahata was the fastest of the 19 Toyota Sedans at 18.22. Kyle Gottula ran a 18.24, Lander a 18.25 and John Bray Jr a 18.32. In the feature, Lander excited the crowd with his three wide pass in traffic around Bray with 8 laps to run for the top spot. Bray ran second despite nearly spinning in the final corner. Gottula was third ahead of Manny Gonzales, Carrie Patton, Wayne DePriest and Jeff Fitch. There were 15 Pure Stocks. Chris Hultquist won the first heat over Frank Mazzei and Cary Hahn. Paul Spencer hit the wall in turn 1 and had to be transported to the hospital with back pain. Aaron Mullins won heat 2 over Rob Mello and Aaron Mundello. Jimmy Reeves could only manage a sixth in his heat, but dominated the 25 lap main with Hahn finishing second over Mundello, A Mullins, Les Wasson, Hultquist, Mello and John Hatz.
