Ukiah, CA --

After settling for second place runs behind point leader Randy Houston in both the dash and fast heat, fast timer Victor Gonella from Petaluma raced to the main event victory for the modifieds as Ukiah Speedway staged a rare Friday night show. Houston did finish second ahead of Tim Smith. Mike Doss opened the night with fast time for the late model class and he raced to a feature win ahead of teammate Jim Stillman Jr after Stillman had won heat race honors. Thomas Wright was third in the feature. After winning the fast heat, Rod Skidmore won the main event for the bombers with fast timer Troy Willey second over Sean Caturegli. The mini stocks returned after an absence and the short four car field saw Andrew Snider score a clean sweep with fast time and wins in the dash, heat and feature.

The modifieds had a ten car field and Gonella's fast time was a 13.534 lap on the 1/4 mile paved oval. Houston turned a 13.675 lap in his Blair Aiken built mount with Smith the only other car in the 13's as he ran a 13.787 lap. Houston beat Gonella and Smith in the dash. They repeated that finish in the fast heat with Mike Johnson wheeling the Mike Karinen car to a win in the slow heat over Sacramento area long tow Scott Woessner and Freedom Hawthorne. Gonella raced to his feature win with Houston second over Smith, Woessner, Ken Bush, Allen Gibbney and John Hawthorne. Johnson was a feature scratch. The late models had an 8 car turnout. Doss' fast time was a quick 13.380 effort as Jeremy Hopkins turned a 13.676 and Stillman a 13.678. Hopkins beat Wright in the dash. Stillman took heat honors with Doss second over Brian Todd and Mike Sullivan. Doss charged to the feature win in front of Stillman, Wright, Hopkins, J J Offenbach and Sullivan.

As usual, the bombers had the biggest turnout with 16 cars. Willey posted fast time honors with his 15.487 lap. Point leader John Saunders had a 15.659 and son Casey Saunders ran a 15.688. C Saunders beat fourth fast Rick Tellstrom in the fast dash. Slow dash action saw Shawn Keown the winner over Anja Allen. Skidmore won the fast heat over last week's feature winner Bob Lawson with Wayne Johnson the slow heat winner. In the feature, it was Skidmore winning over Willey, Sean Caturegli, C Saunders, J Saunders, George Riehl and Lawson. In the mini stock time trials, A Snider set the pace with his 15.289 lap and brother Darin Snider was second at 15.504. A Snider won the dash over Justin Potter and newcomer Simi Tour was second to A Snider in the heat race. In the feature, D Snider scratched and A Snider won over Potter and Tour.

This week, Ukiah Speedway will help close the annual County Fair with a special Sunday night show on August 12.
