Casa Grande, AZ --
Forced to come through the B Main to earn his A Main starting slot, Brad Whitfield raced to victory in the Budweiser Street Stock A Main Saturday night at Central Arizona Raceway. The dirt modifieds raced for the first time without IMCA sanction as the track's move to Saturday night only racing saw IMCA turn down their request to continue the sanction on that night. Veteran Mark Harrison won the modified feature over teenaged Jeremy Payne and Eric Kelley. The USA Dwarf Cars raced for the first time in 2002 at the track and Paul Wightman won the main event ahead of Kevin Cain and Casey Cain. Joshua Shipley had a clean sweep of the modified midget action as he won both his heat and the feature race with Thomas Ogle second.
The usual large field of street stocks required four heat races and a B Main to set the 24 car A Main grid. Tom Hussak beat Mike Hancock in heat 1 with Tim Mecl edging rookie Brandon Garner in heat 2. Double division racer Harrison won heat 3 over Frank Soboski. Former champion Gene Freeman won the fourth heat ahead of Jack Buckner. Whitfield raced his way into the A Main during the B Main action and he still won the 20 lap A Main over Hancock, Garner, Freeman, Rob Colclasure, Lonnie Sanders, Steve Nelson, Perry Mallery, Hussak and Roy Poeling.
No matter the sanction, CAR has a solid group of modified racers who want to race on the high speed, high banked 3/8 mile clay oval. Harrison won the first heat over Jim Walker and Ted Robinson. Kelley beat Payne and Don Sink in heat 3. Harrison captured the feature race with Payne second over Kelley, Robinson, Jay Armstrong, Joe Weigman, Jack Ickes, Bruce Kaplan and Dan Radcliff Jr.
The 21 car dwarf car turnout required a three heat format. Art Garcia beat Larry Ricker and Rick Kochanowski in heat 1. K Cain beat Wightman and Tony Hinsley in heat 2. Dino Soto won the third heat over C Cain and Kevin Stalbaum. The potent Cain brothers could only chase Wightman to the feature win with K Cain second over C Cain. Soto ran fourth over Garcia, L Ricker, Sandy Matthews, Tinsley and Dennis Wutzke. The modified midget results show 12 cars in action. Steven Sanders beat James Edwards in heat 1 with Shipley the winner of heat 2 over Derek McCluskey and Thomas Ogle. Shipley then won the feature race over Ogle, McCluskey, Scott Shaffer, Cole Houser, Tim Ogle and Edwards.
