Las Cruces, NM --

Curt Barnett made it a two win weekend for his Barnett's Harley Davidson sponsored Harris chassis as he won the point season opener at The Speedway of Southern New Mexico Saturday night after winning at his home town track, El Paso Speedway Park on Friday night. During the winter racing season, C Barnett talked about limiting his local dirt track action as he wanted to try the pavement and also wanted to be able to run special events around the country, but his quick start that also includes a win in Albuquerque has him thinking about chasing the rich Barnett Series point prize. He was chased to the checkered flag by a pair of former track champions, Scott Logston and Terry Tipton. Double division racer Royal Jones won the super stock main event ahead of Bob Bentley Jr and Henry Brumley. Twelve year old twin brothers Johnny and Stormy Scott continued their already successful 2002 campaign with a 1-2 finish in the street stock feature after each posted wins. Tom Georges won both the heat and feature in the season debut for the Super Trucks.

The dirt modifieds had a 25 car turnout with several teams now racing twice weekly with El Paso's move to a Friday night schedule. Christy Georges won the first heat over Mike Stringfield with Logston winning heat 2 ahead of Bumper Jones. R Jones won heat 3 with Jerry Garrett a solid second. C Barnett had a perfect night as he track dominator Tipton and his potent Ford in heat 4. James Fleming and track co-promoter Jimmy Ray were feature scratches. C Barnett won the main event over Logston, Tipton, Troy Godwin, Anton Salopek, Billy Roy Harris, Sherman Barnett, B Jones, Mike Wells and John Carney.

The beginning of the point action saw the Super Stock field jump to 22 cars. Bentley beat R Jones in heat 1, double division racer Georges won heat 2 over Victor Colorbio Jr while Brumley took heat 3 with Wayne Pelkey second. Winter season dominator Ivan Burton broke in the heat action and did not run the feature. Top runner Sherman Barnett also failed to start the feature. R Jones won the main event over Bentley, Brumley, Marty Scott, Casey Rush, Colorbio, Jack Skillin and Bryan Armstrong.

The street stocks had a 19 car turnout and J Scott won the first heat over Russell Allen and Randy Mims. S Scott won heat 2 with Brian Gallivan second over Rick Tomas. Mike Garcia was a feature scratch and J Scott outdueled brother S Scott for the feature win. Bobby Otero ran third over a pair of female racers, Cassandra Wells and Holly Jones. Eleven year old Jonathon Burton was sixth ahead of Ralph Trujillo and Tony Bujak. El Paso female racer Holly Simmons gave Las Cruces a try and finished 10th. The Pro Trucks ran an 8 car heat and then the 6 survivors ran the feature race. Georges won the heat race ahead of Cheryl Fox and Alan Dahringer. In the feature, it was Georges again on top as Dahringer ran second over Cheryl Fox, John Wright and Corey Fox.
