Casa Grande, AZ --
Having become a track regular when Central Arizona Raceway switched to non-sanctioned dirt modified action, veteran racer Jack Ickes charged to the win Saturday night ahead of fellow veteran Doc Langston and teenaged R C Whitwell. Double division racer Mark Harrison won the Budweiser Street Stock feature over Brad Whitfield and Gene Freeman. Harrison also moved into first place in the modified points with a 13th place finish in that class as teenaged point leader Jeremy Payne was 21st this week. Rebounding from a previous race disqualification that cost him a win, Steven Ashcraft won the factory stock main event over Tommy Hussak Jr and Heath McEwen. Certainly the hottest dwarf car racer in Arizona, Jesse Chinn raced to another win with the Arizona Dwarf Cars. Nick Bruce ran second.
The dirt modified count was back over 20 for the first time since IMCA refused to sanction Saturday night racing at the 3/8 mile clay oval when the track dropped it's Sunday night schedule. The feature race had 21 starters. Payne won the first heat over D Langston and Jim Walker. Whitwell won heat 2 over Bruce Kaplan and Ickes. Jay Armstrong beat Harrison and Matt Tipton in heat 3. Ickes leaped into the track championship duel with his feature win ahead of D Langston, Whitwell, Kaplan, Marvin Francoeur, Don Sink, Jim Armstrong, Bug Harris and B G Rees. Payne opened the night with a 4 point lead on Harrison and a 44 point advantage over Ickes. Another big field of street stocks allowed for a four heat format. Heat winners were Harrison, Mike Hancock, Tim Worth and Don Earven. Harrison completed his perfect night in this class with his feature win ahead of Whitfield and former champion Freeman. Earven had a strong night with a 4th over Perry Mallery. Track title contenders Hancock and Rob Colclasure were 6th and 7th. Colclasure had started the night with a 3 point lead on Hancock as Tim Mecl had fallen 14 points back. Tonight, Mecl was 11th as Tom Hussak, William Lacy and Lonnie Sanders rounded out the top ten.
The factory stocks ran a 16 car feature. Ashcraft won the first heat over point leader Mike Newton and E J Jones. Matt Forkner won heat 2 over Ricky Cook and Quentin Pierce. Ashcraft was the feature winner ahead of newcomer Hussak Jr, McEwen, Newton, Thomas Guenther, Keith Wells and Marcos Bojorquez. Jones started the night 26 points back of Newton, but ran 9th with third ranked Forkner finishing 10th. The 14 dwarf cars were divided into two heat races. Brad Hickson beat Chinn and Dean Riggs in heat 1. Kevin Hickson won heat 2 over Al Laredo and Tim Reiling. Chinn charged to yet another feature win over Bruce, Riggs, K Hickson, Jerry Larrabee, Laredo, B Hickson and Jim Horton.
