Susanville, CA --
Rebounding from a tough heat race run that hurt his track title fight, Jeff Chew outran visitor Richard Papenhausen to win the dirt modified main event Saturday night at Lassen Speedway. Chew ended the night five points back of point leader Will Zinn, who ran 6th. Papenhausen's father is a businessman in nearby Greenville and Richard runs several events at year at Susanville. This week, he was tuning up for the $5,000 to win Northwest Nationals in Elma, Washington. John Sloan ran third and stands just ten points out of the point lead. Rookie Bill Adkins from Oakley not only won his second straight stock car feature, but did it in clean sweep fashion to close to within 14 points of the point lead. He won his heat, the dash and the feature in the former David Rosa Antioch Speedway championship car. Jay Evans had a night full of seconds and ended the evening just 2 points back of point leader Keith Crosby. Steve Goss struggled to an 11th and fell to third in points. After running second to Cristy Costa in both the dash and heat, Dawn Costa won the mini stock main event and is the point leader with a one point margin over C Costa and a 3 point lead over Josh Richards. C Costa finished second ahead of Beau Reynolds.
There were 9 dirt modifieds at the track, but Boyd Murchison missed the heat action. Papenhausen won the heat race over point leader Will Zinn and D J Short. Fourth place heat finisher Charlie Schuck Jr won the dash over Papenhausen. In the feature, it was Chew winning with Papenhausen second over Sloan, Short, Scott Boutcher, Zinn, Schuck, John Ward and Murchison. Zinn's point lead is 4 over Schuck, five ahead of Chew and 10 ahead of Sloan with fifth ranked Murchison falling 38 points back of the leader.
The stock cars had a solid 12 car turnout. Adkins won the first heat over Jay Evans and Steve Behr. Crosby won heat 2 with Scott Foreman second over Erica Harmon. Adkins beat Evans and Crosby in the dash. In the feature, it was Adkins with his second straight big win as Evans ran second over Steve Behr, Foreman, Harmon, J J Jackalone, Crosby and Robert McGowan. The five way track championship duel finds Crosby with a 2 point lead over Evans, a 9 point lead on Goss, 14 ahead of Adkins and 17 in front of Foreman.
The Costa clan continues to dominate the mini stock action. They provide 3 of the 7 entries and finished in 3 of the top 4 slots in every event. Paul Blacka Jr was done in hot laps. C Costa won the heat race over D Costa and Reynolds. They repeated that finish in the dash, but D Costa was the feature winner with C Costa second over Reynolds, Joanna Costa, Heather Fletcher and Josh Richards. Reynolds is just 7 points out of the point lead in 4th.
The track races a couple divisions of karts each race night. Tonight, Brandon Enos won the Box Stock feature over Kevin Ward, Cale Carver and Brittanie McGowan. Steven Cain won the homemade feature with Mitch Murphy second over Alex Carver.
