Casa Grande, Az -- Passing Arizona dirt modified legend Rick Ward for the lead with just two laps remaining, Tucson teenager Jeremy Payne wheeled his Larry Shaw built car to his second straight feature win Saturday night at Central Arizona Raceway. The victory improved his track point lead as chief challenger Jack Ickes ran third behind pole starter Ward. Payne was forced to come from the 7th row as he finished outside the top four in his heat race. The point race tightened in the Budweiser Street Stock class as the three closest rivals to point leader Gene Freeman finished in the top 3 positions with Freeman settling for fifth. Freeman's brother Brad Whitfield was the race winner ahead of point runnerup Rob Colclasure and Mike Hancock. E J Jones used wins in both his heat race and the feature for the factory stocks to take the point lead from Mike Newton, who ran 8th. Matt Lundy placed second ahead of Ricky Cook. Kevin Cain raced to wins in both his heat and the feature race for the USA Dwarf Cars with Dino Soto edging out heat winner Casey Cain for second.
The dirt modifieds had another strong 25 car turnout that was split into three heat races. Jay Armstrong beat visitor Chuck Black in heat 1 with Tucson racers Brad Campbell and Don Sink 1-2 in heat 2. Joe Weigman won heat 3 ahead of Ickes and Ward. Ward had the pole for the 23 car main event and led the way until the closing laps when Payne made his winning pass. With a fifth place heat finish, Payne had to start in the 7th row and he was impressive in his winning run. Ward salvaged second ahead of Ickes, Campbell, Bruce Kaplan, Weigman, Tom Lucas, Sink, Mark Sember and Carl Trimmer. There were 24 street stocks and 23 survived to start the feature race. Don Earven beat usual dirt late model racer Mike Tahtinen in heat 1 with Colclasure taking heat 2 ahead of Eddie Fansler. William Lacy took heat 3 as Hancock ran second ahead of Alan Compton. Whitfield started the night tied for third in points, 15 behind Colclasure. He ran fourth in his heat, but won the feature honors with Colclasure second ahead of Hancock, Dicky Barnes, Freeman, Brandon Garner, Fansler, D Earven, Lacy and Tom Hussak.
There were 18 factory stocks on hand and 16 cars started that feature race. Steven Ashcraft won the first heat in front of Cook and Jody Henderson. Jones won heat 2 as M Lundy ran second ahead of Keith Wells. Jones then won the feature race to take over as new point leader. M Lundy was second in the race ahead of Cook, Henderson, Tommy Hussak, Gary Armes and Roger Lundy. M Newton ran 8th and fell behind Jones in the standings. Brian Newton was 9th ahead of Quentin Pierce. The dwarf cars had a solid 19 car turnout and ran an 18 car feature race. Brothers K Cain and C Cain won the two heat races. Kevin Stalbaum and Ron Pursley chased C Cain in heat 1. Art Garcia and Larry Ricker were 2-3 in heat 2. Soto was 9th in his heat race, but ran second to K Cain in the feature action. C Cain ran third in front of Tony Martin, L Ricker, Garcia, Roger Dvorak, Tim Jones and David Brodeur.
