El Paso, TX -- El Paso Speedway Park opened their 2003 season with a large 30 car dirt modified turnout. Defending Barnett’s Harley Davidson Series champion Curt Barnett was first at the checkered flag in his Harris, but the tech committee ruled that he should be disqualified for running a mud plug in his left front wheel. That handed the win to Troy Godwin ahead of Lorne Wofford, teenaged Johnny Scott and Christy Georges.
Former IMCA Modified Mountain Region champion Craig Nelson made the long tow from Farmington, NM only to get into a big crash at the start of the B Main with Vince Lepasti. The track is trying double file restarts in 2003 and the 30 lap A Main ran with just a single yellow flag with two laps to run. The disqualification of C Barnett handed the win to Godwin ahead of Wofford, J Scott, Georges, Royal Jones, John Carney Sr, Jimmy Ray, Billy Roy Harris, Scott Logston and Albuquerque’s Richard Johnson. Defending track champion Greg Pratt Jr was 12th, Stormy Scott 17th and Sherman Barnett 20th. Results for the support classes were not available.
