Cortez, CO -- His attempt to win the Mountain Region for the IMCA Modifieds has made Robert Gallegos of Cory, Colorado a regular at the Fairgrounds Speedway in 2003 and he won Friday night’s MidSeason Championship race for the IMCA Modifieds Friday night. The win left the current Mountain Region point leader just 2 points back of Randy Eitel in the track championship duel. Farmington NM’s Regan Tafoya has moved all of his racing into Colorado in 2003 to chase the same Mountain Region honors and the second ranked Regional racer ran second ahead of third ranked Regional entrant Brian Ungaro Friday night. Ungaro is just a single point behind Gallegos in the track title duel. Andy Hockenhull won the IMCA Stock Car feature and closed to within seven points of track point leader Michael Farley in the process. Farley ran second ahead of teenager Dillon Fuchs. Steven McDaniel appears headed to track titles at both Cortez and the Aztec NM track and he won main event honors at both tracks this weekend. At Cortez, visitor Koby Wilson ran second ahead of David Benson. Lester Sage’s hobby stock main event win left him just a single point behind point leader Ed Mangum. Mangum was third behind Mark Maez in the main event. Point leader Jerrett Guillory added another feature win with second ranked Bill Kibel second ahead of third ranked Jim Shinn.

The IMCA Modifieds had a dozen entries on Friday night with Gallegos the main event winner ahead of Tafoya, Ungaro, J J Harpole and Dennis Reib. Reib is the fourth driver chasing the Mountain Region title and he is just 7 points behind track point leader Eitel in the track championship fight. Eitel was 6th on Friday night ahead of Dulane Colcleasure, Chris Vivolo and Brandon Carley. The IMCA Stock Cars had 10 cars in action. Hockenhull and Farley ran 1-2 in the feature ahead of Fuchs, John Hank Jr, Kevin Montgomery and Larry Bradley. Frank Powell Jr settled for 8th and fell 15 points back of point leader Farley. The mini stock feature had ten starters and McDaniel won with Wilson second ahead of Benson, Greg Lee, Genevieve Gallegos, Dian Sivers and Josh Dedmon. McDaniel ended the night 10 points ahead of Lee, 14 in front of D Sivers and 16 ahead of Gallegos. Sage won the hobby stock main over an 8 car field with Maez second ahead of E Mangum, Rany Zufelt, Allen Palmer and Ron Aubuchon. E Mangum ended the night with a one point lead on Sage and 7 points ahead of Zufelt. The dwarf car feature had 7 cars and Guillory took the honors in front of B Kibel, Shinn, Norman Yazzie and Dale Kibel. Guillory’s point lead is 10 over B Kibel and 17 ahead of Shinn.

The July 4th weekend will be a big one in the Four Corners area as the Fairgrounds Speedway will stage the $2,000 to win Jim Henry Memorial for the IMCA Modifieds on July 4-5 after Aztec Speedway stages a $750 to win dirt modified special on Thursday night.
