$300 FIGUE 8 WIN FOR DUANE FAST

by Gary Jacob....Chowchilla, CA....August 1.......Charles Paul from Springville returned to Chowchilla Speedway action on Friday night in a double duty manner as he won the dirt modified main event ahead of Kurtis Moore and ran fourth in the super street stock main that was won by former track regular Red Williams ahead of Frank Hannah. 2002 track champion Jimmy Brewer won the hobby stock main event with teenager Cory Gilmore using a 2nd place run to close within 11 points of point leader Marshall Weaver. Weaver was fifth in the main event. The super four action drew a season high 10 cars and Atascadero's Ron German beat red hot Ron Martinez in the main event with Marysville visitor Brandon Dozier fourth behind point leading Dudley Reed. Mini Four point leader David Mullet from Fresno had another perfect night as he won both his heat race and the main event. A solid 12 car field raced with Matt Myers second in the main event ahead of former hobby stock racer Tim Dean. The figure 8 class chased a $300 prize with veteran racer Duane Fast wheeling the Jack VanHoff car to victory ahead of Thomas McAbee and Fast's son Jarod Fast.

Track point leader Bill Saltzman won the dirt modified heat over Moore and Paul. Garrett Steitz arrived in time to run the feature and Paul won that race ahead of Moore, Steitz and Saltzman. Saltzman holds a solid point 43 point lead over Paul. The super street stock class had five entries and runaway point leader Nathan Corn won the heat race over Hannah and Paul. Williams was fourth in the heat race, but won the main event ahead of point runnerup Hannah, third ranked Darcie Odgers, Paul and Corn.

The 14 hobby stocks were divided into a pair of heat races. Gilmore won the first heat over rookie Jeff Whatley and Weaver. Brewer captured heat 2 over Dan Stephens and McAbee. Brewer won the feature race ahead of Gilmore, Stephens, Whatley, Weaver, McAbee, Eddie Shipman, Jack VanHoff and Mike Stockton. Brewer has a solid hold on third in points, but stands 95 behind Weaver. Rookies Whatley and Stockton are dueling for fourth in points with Whatley just 6 points ahead of Stockton. The Super Four action saw Dozier winning the first heat ahead of Dudley Reed and Darrin Reed. German won heat 2 over Martinez and 2002 champion Ike Reed, who moved his racing to Mohave Valley AZ when he moved to Kingman AZ over the winter. Darrin Reed was a main event scratch to leave a 9 car field. German won ahead of Martinez, Dudley Reed, Dozier, double division racer James McGranahan and I Reed. The mini fours split 12 entries into two heat races. Darren Lamarre won heat 1 over Dean and Tara Smith. D Mullet outraced McGranahan and James Donaldson in heat 2. D Mullet was the main event winner over heat race scratch M Myers, Dean, Lamarre, Donaldson, Robbie Loquaci and Greg Smith.

The 9 car turnout for the figure 8 special included three Watsonville Speedway regulars. D Fast won the $300 prize ahead of McAbee, J Fast, J J Keldsen, Watsonville point leader John Keldsen, Deak Sherrell, Keith Trusso, Tim Shipman and Norman Kuhr.

The August 8 race will feature the limited late models. They will run heat races and a pair of 25 lap features. The best combined finish for the two main events will receive the $500 first prize award. Current Chowchilla point leader Mike Meazell from Gilroy clinched the Watsonville track title on August 1 and will try to add to his Chowchilla point lead on the 8th with a solid group of Watsonville and Antioch visiting cars expected.
