El Paso, TX -- Opening a big weekend for the Las Cruces NM racer, Bumper Jones won Friday nights Barnetts Harley Davidson dirt modified A Main at El Paso Speedway Park in a tight duel with Christy Georges. B Jones then scored a clean sweep on Saturday night across the border at The Speedway of Southern New Mexico. On Friday night, Georges crashed into the rear of B Jones a couple times after the checkered flag and she was disqualified from her 2nd place run (I apologize for having this incident in the Las Cruces story when it really happened in El Paso). The disqualification moved Phoenix Az visitor Terry Belcher Jr up to a 2nd place run ahead of track point leader Johnny Scott. Just 13 years old, J Scott is pacing the point standings in his rookie dirt modified season after being the 2002 street stock champion in Las Cruces. Since adding the Friday night El Paso action to his race schedule, Jason Ziehl from Las Cruces has been the areas hottest street stock racer and he won this nights main event ahead of Jaime Montelongo and Justin Allen. Only a third in the dash kept David Fountain from a clean sweep of the mini stock action as he won heat and the main event. Point leader Ozzie Noder was second in the feature ahead of Rusty Brewer. Don Reynolds won the Legend Car main event ahead of dash winner Robert Gayton and Lamar Skarda.
The dirt modified field was 29 cars as both Belcher Jr and 2002 Casa Grande champion Jeremy Payne towed east for the two nights of racing. Defending track champion Greg Pratt Jr won the first heat over Dave Chenoweth. Paddy Rush nipped B Jones in heat 2 and defending Barnetts Harley Davidson Series champion Curt Barnett won heat 3 ahead of dwarf car graduate Daniel Barcena. Georges won heat 4 ahead of Belcher Jr and Troy Godwin. Pratt beat Jerry Garrett and Rush in the dash. Only the top 3 cars from each heat advanced, so 12 transfer spots were available in the 15 car B Main. Payne won the B ahead of Sherman Barnett, J Scott, Jimmy Ray, Jerry Slawson and Alvie Williams. Among the cars not making the cut were street stock point leader Holly Jones and Gallup NM long tow Kevin Menapace. B Jones won the entertaining duel with Georges in the A Main, but Georges post race actions cost her the runnerup finish. Belcher Jr advanced to second ahead of J Scott, Godwin, Chenoweth, Ray, Royal Jones, Mike Wells, Steve Jones, Stormy Scott and S Barnett. J Scotts point lead is 11 over R Jones and 36 ahead of Ray. Godwin is just 7 points back of Ray and 5 ahead of C Barnett. B Jones is sixth in points, 63 behind the young point leader.
The 20 street stocks were divided into two heat races. Don Newcomb beat Jaime Montelongo in heat 1 and H Jones won heat 2 over Ziehl. H Jones scratched from the dash and ran last in the feature race, but still enjoys a large point lead as closest rival Bobby Yarbrough was missing for a second straight race. Ziehl won the dash ahead of Newcomb and then captured the main event. Jaime Montelongo ran second ahead of Allen, Cassandra Wells, Bobby Otero, Scott Anderson, Sunny Cline, double division racer David Fountain and Jorge Montelongo. H Jones point lead is 56 over Yarbrough. Jaime Montelongo has climbed to third in points, 54 back of Yarbrough and just 12 ahead of Robert Ceniceros. Despite getting his Texas season off to a late start, Ziehl has climbed to fifth in points, just 9 ahead of Cline.
D Fountain is a part time mini stock racer, but he outdueled the four track regulars on this night. D Fountain beat Brewer in the heat, but point leader Noder won the dash with Brewer again second. In the main event, it was D Fountain winning ahead of Noder, Brewer, Joe Acosta and Ralph Fountain. Noders point lead is only 19 points over R Fountain with Acosta another 35 points back in third. The 15 Legend Cars were divided into two heat races. Bud Satterwhite won the first ahead of Terry Herring and Richard Hargenrater. D Reynolds won heat 2 ahead of Tom Hargenrater. Gayton took the dash with Jim Funk second. In the main, it was D Reynolds again on top of Gayton, Lamar Skarda, Satterwhite, Kenny Ozment and R Hargenrater.
