DRAKE, WINTERS AND PAPPS PACE BARONA ACTION

Barona, CA -- Brian Drake led all 20 laps from the pole to win Saturday nights dwarf car feature at Barona Speedway. Eddie Morris charged from fifth starting to finish 2nd and Kevin Drake came from the sixth row to place third. After heat race winner Scott Dodd led the first 6 laps, Gary Winters from Murrieta drove by for the lead and he won the 25 lap Mini Sprint 600 main event. Dodd settled for third place behind John Sparland. Running an SBR Chassis built by Aztec Speedway point leader Aaron Spangler, New Zealand native Gary Papps from Ramona posted the first feature win of his two year IMCA Modified career by leading all 20 laps from an outside front row start. Dwyane Dalton ran second from lap 2 on and Rich Rose ran third. Heat winners Mike Lerwill and Ron Bush started in the front row of the 20 lap street stock main and veteran Lerwill was a wire to wire winner. Dale Smith passed Bush on lap 7 to finish second with Bush third. Pole starter David Addington fell behind Ashley Dunn for one lap in the 20 lap Speedway Midget feature, but it was Addington out front for the final 19 laps. Scott Davis ran second ahead of Norman Reynolds. Making a contact pass on Michael Duran on the final lap, A J Bender won the 20 lap Mini Dwarf Car feature. Blake Drake ran second ahead of Nicole Frantum.

With a 24 car field, the dwarf cars ran three heats and a B Main to limit the A Main grid to 20 starters. The top five advanced from each event. Heat winners were Morris, CDCRA regular Jason Tomlinson and K Drake. Mike Missildine won the B Main ahead of Scott Creighton and Bruce Elliott. The lineup for the 20 lap feature put B Drake and Tom Eaton Jr on the front row with Kevin Frantum and Marc Teixeira in row 2. B Drake took a quick lead over Teixeira with Morris into third on lap 4. Just past midway, Morris raced around Teixeira for 2nd. Sixth row starter K Drake raced into third with just 4 laps to run. B Drake won ahead of Morris, K Drake, Tomlinson, Teixeira, Bill Groves Jr, Ron Dunlap, Missildine, Jeff Thompson and Frantum as only two cars failed to finish. The mini sprint 600 class divided 15 cars into a pair of heat races. Quarter midget graduate Dodd won the first heat over Cory Carlson and Tony Martinez. Corey Ballard beat Tommy Gerow in heat 2. Fourteen cars started their 25 lapper. The lineup was straightup off the heat finishes putting Dodd and C Ballard in the front row. Dodd took a quick lead over C Ballard with 10th starter Winters into third in just 4 laps. C Ballard fell out to advance Winters to second on lap 5. Gerow had dropped out on lap 1, Jan Ballard pitted and then Dawn Sparland hit the wall in turn 4 for a lap 6 yellow. Winters grabbed the lead from Dodd on the restart. Jeff Thompson also briefly got by Dodd, but Dodd was back in second on lap 9. J Sparland also got by Thompson at this point and J Sparland took second from Dodd on the final lap. Winters won ahead of J Sparland, Dodd, Clint Newman, Martinez, Ben Gagnon, Bobby Bender and Thompson.

The IMCA Modifieds had an 8 car turnout, but three arrived after the heat race action. Don Pannel beat Dalton and Mike Corning in the heat race. Pannel and Papps shared the front row for the 20 lap feature and Papps took an immediate lead over Corning. Pannel spun for the first yellow flag and Dalton grabbed second from Corning. Cornings race ended when he crashed into Dalton in an attempt to retake second on lap 11. Papps stayed out front for the entire laps with Dalton finishing 2nd ahead of Rose and Pannel. Both Keith Smith and Lou Tompkins got lapped with Corning and Tim Benner dropouts. The street stock count continues to grow and they had 12 cars on this night. Lerwill beat Greg Domain in heat 1 and Bush won heat 2 ahead of Smith. Again, the lineup was straightup off the heat finishes and Lerwill raced into the lead from his pole start. Smith took second from Bush on lap 7. Lerwill was a wire to wire winner with Smith second ahead of Bush. Billie Baldwin ran fourth ahead of Domain, Frankie Malone and Ron Moses.

The 9 Speedway Midgets ran a single heat race with Addington winning ahead of Dunn and Davis. Again, the feature lineup was straight up off the heat finish and outside front row starter Dunn led the first lap before Addington took over for the final 19. Brandon Currie moved into second on lap 3, but lost the spot to Davis on lap 6. Gary Todd flipped in turn 2 for a lap 9 red flag. Currie was a late race dropout as Addington won ahead of Davis and Reynolds. Troy Tubbs was fourth ahead of Buster Tubbs and J D Baier. Todd continued to race after his flip and he placed 7th. Kerri Frantum and Mikey Hall had the front row for the 11 car Mini Dwarf Car feature. Duran started third and paced the first 10 laps. Bender raced in front for the next five laps before Duran retook the lead. On the final lap, Bender drove hard into Duran in turn 1. Duran was out with the contact and Bender won ahead of Blake Drake, Nicole Frantum, Brianna Frantum, Hall and Courtney Drake. Blake Drake stormed back from a lap 9 flip to finish 2nd.

These six divisions return on Sept 6 with the Legend Cars also in action.
