Las Cruces, NM --

Having reduced his schedule to not race every event at his two home area tracks in 2003, former track champion Scott Logston showed his old form when he raced to a win in the rain delayed second qualifying night A Main for the dirt modifieds Saturday afternoon at The Speedway of Southern New Mexico. The Friday action was rained out after the heat races and rescheduled to run before the regular Saturday night card. Light rain again plagued the Saturday night show but Logston's win placed him outside front row in the $6500 to win A Main event later that night. Logston on Friday won the opening heat race with his Dirt Works mount. Fourth heat winner Curt Barnett chased Logston to the checkered flag to earn the #4 starting spot in the rich finale. Also earning assignments in the 50 lap finale were third place finisher Royal Jones, Rett Salopek and 13 year old El Paso track champion Johnny Scott. J Scott had to battle from 14th starting after running 2nd in the B Main. Texan Monte Bolton earned a front row assignment in the final night's B Main with a sixth place run this afternoon ahead of Bumper Jones. Visiting driver Denny Swartz got a chance to wheel Sherman Barnett's new super stock that Curt Barnett drove to a 2nd behind Royal Jones on Thursday night and Swartz got wins in both the heat race and feature. El Paso champion Fito Gallardo ran second ahead of Henry Brumley. For the second night of the three night weekend, 13 year old Jonathan Burton was the $200 winner in the street stock main event. Steven Pendergraft ran second ahead of track point runnerup Dusty Riggs.

Since all of the heat races were completed before the Friday night rain, the remainder of the show started Saturday afternoon with a pair of C Mains for the dirt modifieds. Eastern New Mexico star Butch Reid Jr won the first C Main ahead of Dave Chenoweth and Roy Don Mason with Albuquerque's Toby Herring fourth ahead of Grand Junction CO long tow Ricky Spangler. Having had a real tough start to his three nights, Phoenix AZ star Terry Belcher Jr rebounded to win the 2nd C Main ahead of Alvie Williams and Colorado long tow Kevin Brown, an Aztec Speedway regular. Troy Godwin and Bobby Curran rounded out the top five. The B Main started 24 cars with the top 12 moving into the preliminary night A Main. Swartz won that event ahead of J Scott and Wyoming long tow Justen Yeager. Recent Casa Grande $3000 winner Anton Salopek was fourth ahead of Herring and Robert Adams Jr. Heat winners took the top four finishing positions in the A Main with Logston chased to his win by C Barnett, R Jones, Rett Salopek and J Scott. The next five earned the front five outside row assignmests in Saturday night's B Main. They were Bolton, B Jones, A Salopek, Lubbock's Matt Newkirk and Tucson AZ regular long tow Jeremy Payne.

Sorry that the Friday night rainout story listed C Barnett as the driver of the Barnett team super stock. Actually, Swartz won that heat race and then he raced to the feature win ahead of heat race runnerup F Gallardo, Brumley, Allen Gaddis, Manny Nunez and the Super Trucks of David Deetz and Cheryl Fox, Gary Boles, Carlos Ahumada and Vince Melone rounded out the top ten. The rained out super stock feature had 22 starters and the street stock field improved to 23 cars. Young J Burton collected his second straight win ahead of Steven Pendergraft, Dusty Riggs, Cassandra Wells, track champion Jason Ziehl, Greg Gorham, Patrick Beach, Justin Allen, Ross Conner and Mike Rosales.
