TRACK CHAMPION SPANGLER REBOUNDS WITH WIN FROM 8TH

Aztec, NM -- Defending track champion Aaron Spangler from Dove Creek, CO rebounded from his broken engine in last week's season by driving from 8th starting to win the Barnett's Harley Davidson dirt modified feature on Saturday night at Aztec Speedway. Spangler had also won last Sunday afternoon at nearby Montezuma County Speedway in Cortez CO. Teenager Porter Smith came from 4th to finish second ahead of former track champion Craig Nelson, who wheels a Ford powered mount. Rex Higgins made it two straight Aztec wins in the IMCA Stock Car class with his #AK47 mount. Former champion Allen Bradley ran second and R Higgins cousin Garrett Higgins was third. Daniel Nelson III won the mini stock feature ahead of Amanda Auckland and opening night winner Brittany Tillerson. Ed Mangum was the hobby stock feature winner ahead of Howard Asbe and impressive rookie Tre Brewbaker.

Aztec Speedway lost a few of it's dirt modified regulars to a pair of $1000 to win specials at the opening weekend of action at Hollywood Hills Speedway, so the 24 cars were divided into three heat races with everyone qualifying to run the main event. J J Harpole won the first heat race ahead of M E Eddleman and Nick Nelson. Eddie Farley captured heat 2 in front of Smith and Chris Vivolo. Heat 3 went to Spangler who had a perfect night. Derek Neil was second ahead of Danny Nelson Jr. The lineup for the 30 lap A Main found Farley and Jody Cornell on the front row ahead of Eddleman and Smith with Spangler lined up 8th and C Nelson 9th. Danny Bradford had problems in his heat race and had to start in 23rd spot. Spangler raced to the win ahead of Smith, C Nelson, Danny Nelson Jr, opening night runnerup Chad Burson, Harpole, opening night winner James Tabet, 16th starter Ralph Klemish, 23rd starter Bradford and N Nelson.

The IMCA Stock Cars again fielded over 30 cars so they used five heats and a B Main to determine the 24 cars in the A Main. Terry Hopper beat Larry Bradley in heat 1 and Ray Hollingsworth won heat 2 ahead of G Higgins. Andy Hockenhull and Samuel Sansoni were 1-2 in heat 3 and Leroy Hartsfield beat Michael Farley in heat 4. Wayne Soares outraced R Higgins in heat 5. The heat action placed 15 cars in the A Main and the B Main transferred 9 more. Daniel Christensen won the B Main ahead of Tim Nobis, Jesse Baldwin, Matthew Higgins and Richard Trujillo. R Higgins charged to the main event win in front of A Bradley, G Higgins, Frank Powell Jr, L Bradley, Hollingsworth, A Hockenhull, 18th starter Baldwin and Soares.

The mini stocks split 11 cars into a pair of heat races. Joshua Brown beat Tillerson in heat 1 and last week's Cortez CO winner Greg Lee won heat 2 ahead of Zach Rouse. Both feature winner Daniel Nelson III and runnerup Auckland were third in their heat races. Tillerson ran third in the feature ahead of Gary Linker, Rouse, Julian Garcia Jr and Justin Prugh. The hobby stocks show 14 cars in the heat action, but only 11 in the feature finish as heat winner Ronald Mangum, Jerry Jackson and Josh Turnbull are all missing from the feature rundown. Jeff Jennings beat H Asbe in heat 1 and Ronald Mangum won heat 2 ahead of E Magnum. E Mangum beat H Asbe, Brewbaker, Ron Peterson, Jennings and Buck Allison in the feature finish.
