Fernley, NV -- Bill Smith III from Sparks has been the busiest of the Northern Nevada IMCA Modified racers early in the season running a complete schedule at Merced Speedway in California waiting for the Northern Nevada tracks to open up. All that track time paid off as he successfully fended off a stiff challenge from recent Watsonville Speedway feature winner Kellen Chadwick to win the opening night IMCA Modified feature at Reno-Fernley Raceway with his D&M Performance Chassis. James Thibodeaux from Tonopah was third and Scotty Slatter made the long tow north from Pahrump to finish fourth. John Hood won the Pro Stock main event ahead of Dean Cichowicz and Shawn Natenstedt with 2003 champion Craig Eubanks fourth. Former mini stock racer Nick Reid won the hobby stock main ahead of Mike McGovern and Dean Clark. Richard Scott outdueled Brian Coclich and Danyale Urban in the modified compact main and Jerry Roseland was the first night winner in the pure stock compacts ahead of Mike Langevin and Aaron McIlvain.

Nineteen IMCA Modifieds checked in, but Byron Hutchinson's night ended in hot laps. Thibodeaux beat Central California invader Chadwick in heat 1 and Robert Miller outraced Slatter and Jim Foley in heat 2. Miller's mount carries #K9 in 2004. Conrad Wilson missed his heat race, but tagged the 18 car main event grid. Smith had finished fifth in his heat race, but charged to the feature win ahead of Chadwick, Thibodeaux, Slatter, Chadwick's travel mate Brian Pearce, an impressive charge forward by Wilson, Shawn Marlow, Russell Rosario and veteran Wayne Richards. Robert Miller settled for tenth. With the addition of several strong former hobby stock racers, the Pro Stock class also found 19 cars in action. Eubanks put his Ford in the winner's circle for heat 1 ahead of hobby stock graduates Joe Speechio Jr and Jason Chapman. Cichowicz and Hood ran 1-2 in heat 2 and another hobby stock graduate Matt Ramthun was third ahead of Roy Peterson's truck. Both Kevin Mills and Randy Reid were feature scratches with Hood racing to the win ahead of Cichowicz, Shawn Natenstedt, Eubanks, Chapman, Ramthun, Gary Nevers, R Peterson and Jim Smith III.

The hobby stocks fielded 18 cars and Jeff Macedo beat Kevin Boles and Clark in heat 1 while Randy Miller returned to action with a win in heat 2 over Richard Italiano and Larry Shearin. N Reid ran fourth in his heat race, but was the feature winner ahead of McGovern, Clark, Chris O'Neill, Italiano, Steve Rauscher, Macedo, Boles and Gary Bayne. The modified compact class split 16 entries into a pair of heat races and Missy Natenstedt won heat 1 ahead of Kevin Knight and Stephen Crook. Nate Creiglow won heat 2 ahead of Chris Oberman and Danyale Urban. It was a tough night for Dennis Crook with a 7th in his heat and 16th in the feature. After a fourth place heat run, Scott won the feature honors ahead of Coclich, Urban, Creiglow, Knight, S Crook, Oberman, M Natenstedt and Ken Arnett. The pure stock compacts led the way with 20 entries. Mike Langevin won heat 1 over Brandon Martin and Andy Bihl. Roseland had a clean sweep as he won heat 2 ahead of A McIlvain and Lori Oberman. Shannon Theissen was a feature scratch and Roseland won the main event ahead of Langevin, A McIlvain, Joshua Long, Neva Doiel, Andy Bihl, Lynda Crook and Doug Davis.
