Anderson, CA --

Veteran Medford, OR racer Ken Scales used his fast time qualifying effort to win both his Saturday night heat race and Sunday afternoon feature from the pole at Shasta Speedway's 60 lap open comp modified portion of the Win River Casino 150 weekend. Scales' win in his Ellis Chassis was worth $1,500 and Randy Houston was a race long second to collect $700 as Shasta Speedway track champion Ben Phillips won $500 for third. Oregon's Willie Thompson was a $400 fourth. Thompson will carry the point lead into the finale of the three track Tri-Western Challenge Series at Lakeport on Oct 16-17 as he had a second at Eureka and fourth here while Phillips combined a 2nd and a 6th. Scales was 10th at Eureka. Eureka winner Denny Cashada crashed in the C Main at Shasta.

Scales led the 53 modifieds that survived to take time trials with his 15.227 lap as Thompson ran 15.252. Altamont regular Wes Miller was third at 15.267 with Guy Young, Houston and Phillips also in the 15.2 range. The new track management altered the format for the October open comp as the ten fastest ran a heat to set the front five rows for the 60 lap A Main, but split the remaining cars into 4 straight up heats and advanced two or three cars out of each of those into the A Main. Phillips won the dash over Young and Scales, but Scales used his pole start to win the fast heat and earn Sunday afternoon's pole. Thompson, Houston and Pacific Coast Regional champion Mark Welch ran 2-3-4 in that fast heat. Lakeport champion Bryan Denton took a wild ride off the end of the track in the fast heat and destroyed his car. He was transported to the hospital with a possible broken knee. Other heat winners were Mike Hubert Sr, Eric Schmidt, Allan Lyly and Ed Burris. B Main runnerup Steve Davis had to borrow Joshua Dorman's car to run the 60 lapper. Scales took a quick lead over Houston, Thompson and Phillips with Roseville champion Jim Miller spinning for a lap 2 yellow. Phillips took third from Thompson on lap 4. Ralph Caudill spun for a lap 6 yellow. Scales had easily built a strong lead when Todd Van Boekel spun for a lap 19 yellow flag and Hubert Sr pitted. Welch briefly gained fifth on lap 27, but Young had it back by lap 30 when B Main winner Shannon Brady blew for a caution. The race had a very rare DNF for Bob Strauss as the Lakeport Speedway veteran limped pitward on lap 37. Jason Philpot was lapped as he spun for a second time. After running green from lap 30, Jim Miller blew to trigger a turn 1 melee on lap 53 that involved Hubert Sr and Caudill. Both Eddie Laws and Aaron Hicks dropped out. Scales again easily pulled away from Houston for the win with Phillips settling for third in front of Thompson, Ed Burris, Young, Welch, Richie Potts and Schmidt as 16 of the 24 starters finished lead lap.

Brady and Davis ran 1-2 wire to wire in the 25 lap B Main for the modifieds. Laws briefly lost third to Kenny Bellamy early in the race, but stormed back to finish there ahead of C Main transfer Jim Miller and Barry Callouette. Stockton ace Steve Stacy was eventually removed from this race after he spun several times. Fourth place duelers Dan Dabbs, Nick Porter III, Harold Rieker and Lyly were eliminated in a lap 20 crash. Lakeport veteran Chuck Pruett led all 20 laps to win the C Main in front of J Miller, Callouette and Joshua Dorman. Norm Boucher was running third when a tap from J Miller sent him spinning and he was hit hard by Denny Cashada to end Cashada's day.
