Bakersfield, CA -- Victories in both of the twin 40 lap features pushed Josh Horn back into the NASCAR late model point lead at Mesa Marin Raceway on Saturday night. Horn started the night 23 points behind rookie point leader David Mayhew, but Atascadero's Mayhew had a tough night and Horn posted the twin wins. Doug Foos from Tehachapi and defending track champion Brian Richardson were 2-3 in the first 40 lapper while Horn only led the closing laps of the second 40 lapper after leaders Ray Marroquin and Eric Richardson had crashed. Former Madera Speedway regular Chris Smith from Mendota got his best Mesa Marin finish with a 2nd in the second feature ahead of B Richardson and Michael Burrow. Horn emerged from the busy night with an 18 point lead on Mayhew while B Richardson climbed back into track title contention, 26 points back of the new point leader. Former modified racer Dean Kuhn from Oceanside swept the West Coast Pro Truck action with fast time, a dash win and the 50 lap feature victory. He led every lap and point leading Aaron Staudinger ran second ahead of Chris Johnson. Staudinger lives in Canyon Country and Johnson in Claremont.

Nationally known kart racer Mayhew did put his Ford in the fast time slot for the 14 late models at 19.912 as Devlin Autry posted a 19.939. B Richardson ranked fourth with his 20.024 and Burrow ran a 20.135. Roy DeGeer put his Ford in fifth. After having problems with his tires in the previous race, Horn went for new rubber on all four corners for this night. DeGeer was an early dropout in the first feature and Autry tangled with Marroquin and Mayhew on lap 18. Horn controlled the 40 lapper and was not challenged by runnerup Foos or third place B Richardson. Burrow ran fourth ahead of Smith, E Richardson and Marroquin. Mayhew was 10th and teammate Robert Davis 11th. Jim Cooley took over the car that he shares with Davis for the second 40 lapper. In that race, E Richardson got into the rear of race leading Marroquin on lap 29 and Marroquin spun. E Richardson pitted to remove his damaged body work and didn't make it back for the restart. Horn found himself leading again and he won ahead of Smith, B Richardson, Burrow, Foos, DeGeer, Autry and Lloyd Wren Jr. Mayhew was 13th in this race. E Richarson and Burrow are now tied for fourth, 53 points back of Horn and just 5 ahead of Foos.

The West Coast Pro Trucks brought 15 to Mesa Marin and Kuhn turned quick time honors with his 20.746 lap on the paved half-mile to easily pace the 21.158 of Staudinger and the 21.199 for Johnson. Jeff Williams, Dave Lyon and Mike Young rounded out the quick six. The fastest 9 were all in the 21 second bracket. Kuhn beat Williams and Staudinger in the dash and controlled all 50 laps of their feature race. Staudinger ran second ahead of Johnson, Lyon, Sean Bennett, Young, Jim Satterfield and Chad Daly. Staudinger took second from Bennett on lap 39 and a lap 43 yellow flag gave him a final run at former Irwindale Speedway modified champion Kuhn.

The first Chevron Texaco High School Series race of the schedule was won by recent Delano High graduate Chris Meadows. John King from Kern County Fire won the 911 Race for Youth feature. Point leading Leo Bagnis won the dash and feature for the Super Moto Open Class. Casey Yarrow and Matt Pursley were 2-3 in the dash and Yarrow own the heat race over Bagnis and Pursley. In the feature action, it was Bagnis winning ahead of point runnerup Yarrow, Pursley, Rick Pearce, Jeff Harrington and Ryan Abler. Point leading David Lucas won both the heat and feature for the Amateur riders. Scott Nakamura was second in the heat ahead of Bryson Hopfe. Hopfe ran second in the feature race ahead of Cody Cates, Travis Ellis, Cliff Sullivan and Nathan Flud.
