Medford, OR -- Racing from 8th starting to the lead in just 6 laps, Tim Kaeding wheeled the Beef Packers mount to his 6th Golden State Challenge winged 410 sprint car win of 2004 in the special Tuesday night show at Southern Oregon Speedway. A midweek race in Oregon enroute to Skagit Speedway's rich Dirt Cup weekend has been a long tradition for the traveling California cars and it has been staged in recent years in Medford after earlier being contested in Cottage Grove. T Kaeding's win paid $3500 and he had to fend off a late challenge from his father Brent Kaeding, the fast qualifier who won $1500 for second. Running the team to B Kaeding, Wayne Williams ran a season best third for a $1000 payday. Silver Dollar Speedway point leader Blake Robertson ran fourth and Medford's own Billy Nutter thrilled the standing room only crowd as he drove from 14th starting to a $750 fifth. Coming off a Saturday night win in Cottage Grove, Nutter wasn't planning to run the Medford event until he saw his name in the newspaper advertising. He ended up with a huge payday as he received a $700 bonus as the highest finishing 360 ci entry and was a $75 heat race winner to push his overall earnings to $1525 for the night. Nutter was quick to praise his new Zeitler chassis and the work of engine man Cale Carder.
The 22 car turnout included just 11 Golden State Challenge Series regulars. B Kaeding posted quick time with his 11.864 clocking on the 3/8 mile clay oval. Series point leader Jason Statler was second at 11.964 and T Kaeding was the final 11 second qualifier at 11.991. Series point runnerup Andy Forsberg just missed with his 12.001 clocking and Australia's Trevor Green put the Morrie Williams car in fifth at 12.053. Wi Williams had a 12.088 and Roger Crockett put his Eugene OR based car in seventh at 12.128. Kevin Pylant, local Randy Rodgers and Sean Becker rounded out the quickest ten. Jayme Barnes and Ron Smith broke in hot laps to end their nights, but Barnes jumped into the backup Forsberg car to get starting money in the feature. The cars were divided into three qualifying heat races. Becker won heat 1 from third starting ahead of sixth starter B Kaeding and fellow third row starter Forsberg. Outside front row starter Nutter thrilled the big crowd when he fought off fourth starter Pylant to win heat 2 as point leader Statler was third. Another local win saw San Jose transplant T J Winningham take head three from an outside front row start. T Kaeding came from sixth to place second ahead of Robertson. With just a one division show, the track added a pair of trophy dash events. The fast Dash for Cash was won by Green ahead of Statler and B Kaeding. The B Dash went to Placerville CA racer Andy Gregg ahead of Jim Skinner and Nutter.
The inversion for the feature race came up a ten putting Becker and Rodgers on the front row ahead of Pylant and Crockett. Forsberg, T Kaeding, Statler and B Kaeding filled rows 4 and 5. T Kaeding took just six laps to take the lead from 8th starting and he built his advantage to 150 yards, but yellow flags and lapped traffic gave 10th starter B Kaeding a run at the leader. T Kaeding's car was set perfectly for the dry and rough track. Running an Eagle Chassis, T Kaeding has won 6 of his 13 Golden State starts, but trails in the standings because he skipped one month of the schedule to race with the World of Outlaws. B Kaeding ran second ahead of fifth starter W Williams, 12th starting Robertson and 14th starter Nutter. The top ten was rounded out by Green, young Matt Menne from Fort Jones CA, Pylant, Crockett and Winningham. Point leader Statler broke an axle coming off turn 2 on lap 21, crashing into the fence and flipping. He suffered a bruised right shoulder and point runnerup Forsberg also failed to finish.
