Lake Pleasant, AZ -- A rare Friday night show at Canyon Raceway saw Jesse Chinn outduel Dean Riggs in the 20 lap dwarf car feature as that group opened their two night Bob Schaaf Memorial event. Schaaf was a dwarf car racer who was killed in a December 2003 plane crash very close to Canyon Raceway. The mini sprint 600 and modified midget 250 classes ran without wings in a non point affair. They combined forces for their 20 lap feature and Chad Boat led the final five rounds to score the 600 win after leader Mike Colegrove flipped hard on a restart. Early leader Stephen Sanchez ran second. Kevin Simington was the 250 winner over Chris Willaman. Mike Huneycutt also paced just the final five laps to get the Pure Stock 20 lap feature win with early leader Chris Andriso second ahead of Chris McCurdy. Vince Outlaw took the lead on lap 5 from Frank Outlaw and he went on to win the 12 lap bomber main ahead of John Muller and F Outlaw. The event was run despite sprinkles, heavy winds and severe lightning. The figure 8 feature at the end of the night was run in a heavy rain that left the six cars with no traction. Flagman Chaz Baca scored another feature win ahead of track owner Jeff Stafford and Danny Cranton.
The Arizona Dwarf Cars attracted 19 teams for the first night of the two day special. The dash was for rookies only and Doug Borders got that win ahead of Kenny Hodgkins and Clayton Echols. Chinn won the first heat race over John Priest and Riggs. Borders also won his heat with C Echols in second. Melvin Spaght and Hodgkins ran 1-2 in heat 3. Seventeen of the 19 starters were running at the finish of their 20 lap feature. C Echols led one lap and Danny Torgerson two laps before a rim riding Chinn raced into the lead. The only caution flag came on lap 8 when Borders and Priest tangled. Riggs moved into challenge leader Chinn and ran the remainder of the race on the rear nerf of Chinn. Torgerson ran third ahead of Brandon Echols, Stafford, Jerry Larrabee, Jim Ward and Priest.
The mini sprints and modified midgets were separated for the heat action. The 600 heat went to Colegrove ahead of Jesse Venice and Stephen Sanchez. Simington won the 250 heat race over Ryan Copley and Chad Fife. The combined feature had 15 starters but only 8 survived to see the checkered flag after 20 laps. Sanchez paced the first 8 laps before Colegrove took over. By lap 9, the faster 600s were lapping the 250 competitors. 250 star Copley got nudged into a flip on lap 15. On the restart, leader Colegrove flipped hard in turn 1 for a second straight red flag. Neither driver was hurt and Boat paced the final five laps for the win ahead of Sanchez, Venice, Derek McCluskey and Mike Bisser. Simington was the 250 winner ahead of Willaman and Doug Welty.
The pure stocks only attracted 13 cars on the Friday night and they were split into two heat races. Ty Weidner beat Andy Huffman in heat 1 and Ron Poe won heat 2 over Scott Hollon. Andriso made a rare Canyon appearance and looked like he might pick off his first ever win at the 3/8 mile clay oval. The race was only slowed twice for yellow flags and Andriso paced the first 15 laps before winner Huneycutt took command. Huneycutt won ahead of Andriso, Chris McCurdy, Huffman, Weidner, Marlowe Wrightsman and Chuck Kuehl.
Vince Outlaw won the bomber heat race ahead of Muller and F Outlaw. In the 12 lap feature, F Outlaw led four laps and V Outlaw the final 8 for the win. Muller got second ahead of Lonnie Horgen, F Outlaw, double division Scott Hollon, Aaron Rider and Jacob Rohde. Muller is 10 points ahead of Horgen and 31 in front of F Outlaw. Six cars raced the figure 8 feature in the wet conditions and flagman Baca paced the entire race for the win ahead of Stafford, Danny Cranton, Huneycutt, Rohde and Horgen. Baca holds a two point lead on Stafford in their championship duel.
