Hanford, CA --
Moving over the JDK Motorsports GRT Chassis for the weekend, Watsonville Speedway champion Bobby Hogge IV won both the 10 lap Kings Clash and his qualifying heat Friday after settling for second fast time in the talent filled open comp modified field at Kings Speedway. The Clash and it’s $500 winners take all purse from Western Speed and Fuel was moved onto the Saturday night portion of the schedule when time trials and heat races for the record field of cars ate up all the available minutes on Friday. A record 68 modifieds were on hand and Hogge IV’s father Bobby posted fast time in the Joe Carr chassis that Hogge IV normally drives. The large field was split into 7 ten lap qualifying heats and a second place finish was required to advance into Saturday night’s rich 30 lap A Main paying $1,750 to win.
Time trials were dominated by Northern California cars as Hogge threatened the track record with his 17.910 lap as Hogge IV ran 18.003, recent Bakersfield winner A J Kirkpatrick a 18.023, defending race champion Todd Souza a 18.153 and Chad Chadwick a 18.165. Yuma Speedway Park dominator Alan Updyke was sixth fast ahead of Bobby Scott Jr and modified legend Scott Busby. The 7 heat races saw the six fastest qualifiers inverted in each with a 1-2 finish required to advance to the A Main.
Bobby Hogge came from sixth starting to win the first heat ahead of chassis builder Joe Carr and Busby. Oregon’s Mark Wauge was leading when he was run over when he slowed for a yellow flag and given a flat right front tire. Bobby Hogge IV not only won heat 2, but was 1/3 lap in front at the checkered flag. Steve Smothermon spun leading and San Jose champion Ken Nott Jr was second ahead of Auburn’s Richard Brace Jr. Jeff Heusdens spun out of second and Tom Stidham lost an engine in a huge ball of flames. Heat three also saw the winner came from sixth starting as Kirkpatrick won over Kings regular Lonnie Lacy Jr and Dave Soito Jr. Mike Johnson suffered heavy rear suspension damage when he hit a spun Michael Paul. Antioch champion Bart Reid fell from 3rd to 4th with an off track excursion. Bobby Scott Jr used a late race pass to win heat four ahead of fellow Watsonville racer Chuck Harrell and Kenny Pelphrey. Les Richardson spun out of second and Susanville star Stoney Jackson had a flat running third. Souza won heat five in front of Hanford champion Jimmy Reeves and Randy McDaniel after Hank Silva spun out of second. Antioch star Chris Wadsworth used a white flag pass to edge Steve Pemberton for the heat six win with Brian Cass third. Despite time trialing with no hot laps, Merced champion Paul Stone won the 7th heat with Dennis Clay second in front of Updyke and Richard Papenhausen.
The 8 fastest qualifiers drew for their starting order for the ten lap Kings Clash
and it’s $500 winner’s payment. Scott and Souza drew the front row with Hogge and Updyke in row 2. Hogge IV lined up sixth. Souza raced into the lead over Updyke, but the flying Hogge IV was second in just two laps. Chad Chadwick dropped out early and Hogge pitted from fourth on lap 7. Hogge IV ran down leader Souza and won the race with an outside pass exiting turn 4 on lap 9. Souza ran second ahead of Updyke, Scott and Busby.
