PURKEY IMPROVES NCRA POINT LEAD WITH $3000 WIN IN NEBRASKA

McCool Junction, NE -- NCRA point leader Al Purkey from Coffeyville KS won a late race duel with Nebraska's Steve Kosiski to score a $3000 win as NCRA and MLRA combined forces at Junction Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Dirt modified star Kevin Larkins paced the field for 14 laps before Kosiski took over. Purkey was able to wrestle the top spot from Kosiski with his Larry Shaw mount in lapped traffic on lap 34 and he went on to win by a car length. The win bolstered Purkey's position at the top of the NCRA season point standings as his closest point rival Kelly Boen suffered a broken drive plate and was credited with 21st place.

The first 16 spots in the 22 car A Main grid were determined by passing points earned in a series of five heat races with nearly 40 cars in action. Two B Mains rounded out the field and Nebraska's Tommy Rowe won the first over Gary Gorby, Kerry Schultz, Jason Humphrey, Herb Nagy and Dale Eaton. Another Nebraska racer Mike Wiarda won heat 2 over Greg Larson, Ted Martin, Grand Junction CO long tow Butch Clark, Denver area racer Steve Lewis and Terry Melton. Colorado's Ken Brack was 8th and Missouri's David Turner saw his car completely destroyed in a fierce crash. Larkins set the early pace in the 40 lap feature before Kosiski gained the point. Purkey was able to outduel Kosiiski in the heavy lapped traffic for his fourth NCRA win of 2004. Kosiski ran second and Larkins was a solid third. Wiarda came through the pack for fourth ahead of Bill Murphy, Missouri's Alan Vaughn, Jason Bodenhamer, Kansas TORA star Delbert Smith and new NCRA regular Dean Moore from Grand Junction CO. Moore climbed to 9th in points. Colorado's Scott Lewis was 16th and Dave Garmann ran 20th. Iowa legend Gary Webb placed 23rd.

The NCRA teams moved over to 81 Speedway in Wichita KS for a Sunday night show.
