Antioch, CA -- Marysville’s Randy McDaniel, a frequent visitor to Antioch Speedway, raced to an $1800 win Saturday night as he fended off the challenges of past Antioch track champion Scott Busby in the dirt modified portion of the Indian Summer Series Opener. Antioch and Watsonville have combined forces to present the Indian Summer Series in 2004 and Antioch reduced their event to a single day the week of the event. The series concludes at Watsonville on Oct 15-16. Busby won $900 and Bert Elworthy was a $600 third as 32 dirt modifieds checked in. The super street stock action saw Watsonville Speedway regulars claim all four heat race wins and three of the top four slots in the main event. Watsonville track champion Dennis Pelphrey from Soquel was the $1400 feature winner ahead of veteran Rick Watterworth, who won $700. Doug Hagio pocketed $500 for third. The event lined up the heat races in the order of the entries were received and Steve Montgomery was rewarded with the pole of heat 1 for the hobby stocks by being the first entry. He won heat 1 from the pole and then proceeded to outduel Watsonville champion Sam Kennedy for the $500 feature win. Kennedy won $300 and Watsonville rookie John Dawson Jr was a $200 third. Antioch track champion Bob Newberry was the second entry in the wingless sprint cars and he won his heat from the pole, then outdueled heat 1 winner Billy Macedo for the feature win. Darrell Hanestad ran third.
The 32 car turnout in the dirt modifieds was divided into four heat races and Antioch point runnerup J D Willis came from third to win heat 1 over Chowchilla champion Brad Coelho and Mike Salazar. The top four finishers in each heat moved into the feature action. Steve Noack and Busby shared front row for heat 2 and Busby won with McDaniel in second ahead of Don Shelton. Outside front row starter Steve Mosiman won heat 3 over pole starter Keith Brown Jr and Nick Caughman Jr. Richard Papenhausen was driving for Ira Compton, but was disappointed that they brought a claimer engine to an open race and he ran fifth in heat 3. Elworthy got the win in heat 4 over Petaluma champion Michael Paul Sr and David Press. Six more transfers were available in the B Main and Papenhausen worked on his engine after the heat action and coaxed a B Main win out of it ahead of Norm Beck, Rob Norris, Antioch champion Aaron Crowell, Michael Paul Jr and Fred VonStieff. Both Ryan McDaniel and Todd Tadiello had broken in hot laps and the heat action ended the night for Mark Sargent, Tim Yaeger Jr and Don Camilli. The feature was full of incidents and threatened to be shortened by the time limit. McDaniel, Busby, Elworthy and Willis dueled for the win and all had command of the race at one time. Willis failed to finish and Papenhausen even charged from 17th starting into the top five before a pair of tangles with Caughman Jr ended his night. McDaniel raced to the win in front of Busby, Elworthy, Noack, Coelho, Dennis Fraser, Norris, Crowell, Ed Davies, Salazar and VonStieff.
The super street stocks had 27 cars including five Watsonville cars. Bill Hyland won heat 1 from the pole with Petaluma’s Manny Avila second over Antioch dominator Bob Motts Jr. Hagio outraced fellow front row starter David Hill in heat 2 with Jamie Reynolds finishing third. Pelphrey won heat 3 from the pole with Antioch female ace Denise McCown second ahead of Petaluma star Woody Woodward. Chester Kniss was disqualified and ejected from the premises after his actions in heat 1 and Antioch star Jeff Silva broke in heat 2 to end his night. Eric Berendsen and Tim O’Hara joined him as B Main scratches. D J Petrell raced to the B Main win ahead of Melissa Hansen, Michael Newman and Les Friend. Pelphrey continued the success that he has had at Antioch in very rare appearances as he raced to the feature win in front of Watterworth, Hagio and Hyland. Woodward ran fifth ahead of Scott, Babb, D McCown, Friend and Hansen.
The hobby stocks had the biggest turnout with 33 cars in action including four from Chowchilla Speedway. Montgomery turned his pole start into a win in heat 1 over Watsonville champion Kennedy and Jason Buchanan. Antioch star Dave Lexer won heat 2 over Daniel Mendes and talented Watsonville rookie John Dawson Jr. Jason Robles came from 4th to win heat 3 over Raymond Benkowski and Kevin Fitzpatrick. Terry DeCarlo Jr also came from 4th to win heat 4 ahead of Gene Haney and Bob Sutton. Jimmy Robbins missed the heat action, but was a B Main transfer as Chowchilla star Marshall Weaver won the B Main over Rob Porteous, Mike Matheson, Kevin Paulsen and Robbins. Roy Stephens got the final transfer slot. Montgomery and Kennedy put on a crowd pleasing duel throughout the A Main with Montgomery getting his first ever feature win. Kennedy ran second with Dawson third ahead of Chowchilla’s Dan Stephens, Benkowski, Fitzpatrick, Weaver, Mendes, Watsonville’s Bill Sorg, Tim Welence and Ronnie Jones.
The 15 wingless sprint cars were divided into a pair of heat races and Macedo got the first heat win over Jim Perry Jr and Darrell Hanestad.
