NEAR SWEEP FOR ROYAL JONES IN LAS CRUCES SPRINT CAR ACTION

Las Cruces, NM -- Only a second in his heat kept Royal Jones from perfection as the veteran racer collected his first winged 305 sprint car feature win of 2005 Saturday night at The Speedway of Southern New Mexico. He won both the dash and feature with Mike Wells second in both events. M Wells also ran second in his heat race. Billy Roy Harris beat Jones in their heat race and ran third in the feature action. The super stock feature went to Jake Boles ahead of Samuel Alonso Jr and point leader Jonathan Burton. The street stocks had a big 27 car feature and runaway point leader Mike Rosales won ahead of Miles Widmer and Paul Burton. M Rosales had won his heat, but missed a sweep as P Burton beat him in the dash. The super trucks did have a clean sweep as Art Viramontes posted wins in his heat, the dash and the feature. Lloyd Duffey placed second ahead of Eric Luchini. The same divisions had been rained out on Friday night in El Paso.

With several of the top area teams in Tucson AZ running a special unwinged two day show, the winged 305 sprint car count was down to 17 cars. Jay Jonas won heat 1 over Richard Wilbee and Jimmy Harris. Young Laboe Labrado won heat 2 in front of M Wells and Don Grable. Dirt modified racers B Harris and Jones were 1-2 in heat 3. Jones outraced M Wells and B Harris in the dash. The feature action was thrilling as Jones posted his first winged sprint car win of 2005 ahead of M Wells, B Harris, Jonas, Grable, J Harris, Wilbee, Leith Labrado, Laboe Labrado and Robert Herrera. Ten super stocks checked in but top runner Eric McNutt broke in his heat and scratched from the feature. Car builder Martin Robinson won heat 1 over Alonso and Cameron Martin. J Burton won heat 2 over Rick Ortega and Jack Skillin. Ortega was the dash winner with Alonso second. J Boles had finished fifth in his heat, but raced to the feature win ahead of Alonso, J Burton, Ortega, Skillin, Robert Hill and Martin. J Burton holds a 29 point lead on Skillin with Gary Boles another 6 points back in third. McNutt fell to 4th, 13 behind G Boles and 8 ahead of Ortega. J Boles is sixth, 6 behind Ortega.

Twenty seven street stocks checked in and the track elected to let everyone start the feature on the 3/8 mile clay oval. Patrick Beach won heat 1 over Nick Rivera and P Burton won heat 2 over Justin Allen. Mike Garcia beat Dusty Riggs in heat 3 and it was M Rosales getting heat 4 over Tim Jackson and Widmer. P Burton then added the dash win over M Rosales. The feature win was M Rosales third in the four point races. Widmer ran second ahead of P Burton, Allen, Garcia, Steve Dupree, previous week winner Vanessa Robinson, Derek DeMartino, Cassandra Wells and Bruce Brinkerhoff. M Rosales great start has produced him a 40 point lead over Garcia. C Wells and P Burton are tied for third, another 13 points back. V Robinson is fifth, 57 behind M Rosales. The super trucks fielded 15 teams and Viramontes won the opening heat race over Duffey and Lee Humble. Allan Dahringer won heat 2 over Randy Lancaster and Critt Coburn. Viramontes added the dash win over Lloyd Turner and Coburn. Viramontes completed his clean sweep with the feature win in front of Duffey, Luchini, Turner, the Mitchell/Alons entry, Rex Porter, Lancaster and Cheryl Fox. Rick Jackson won the first super truck race, but ran 9th this night.
