Lake Pleasant, AZ -- Many time series champion Rickey Hood won Saturday night’s SCOA winged 410 sprint car feature at Canyon Raceway as he outdueled New Mexico’s Jason Grady and 2004 series champion Jeff Slinkard. Hood is driving for Steve Cushman in 2005 and the potent team has scored several USA Race Park wins as the changing state of Southwest Racing has left SCOA with very few dates. Steve Martin and Marty Wilcox rounded out the top five. A big turnout of mini sprint 600s and modified midget 250s led to a 24 car combined feature. Heat winner Jacob Hawkins was the 600 winner as Justin Fisher and young Michael Colegrove ran 2-3. With an 11th place run, Jacob Grimes was the 250 victor as 13th place Kevin Simington ran second. Rob Munoz was the pure stock feature winner and he closed a little ground in the track title fight as point leader Marlowe Wrightsman ran 8th. Chris McCurdy and Craig Carrajat finished 2-3 ahead of 14 year old Cody Center. Wrightsman’s point lead is 40 over Lonnie Horgen, 61 over Chuck Kuehl and 66 in front of Munoz. John Muller got the bomber feature win ahead of Frank Outlaw and Scott Gunn. Gunn closed Les Horgen’s point lead down to just 13 points as Les Horgen ran fourth.

There were 19 winged sprint cars and they were divided into three heat races. Martin won the opening heat over MoPar racer Brian O’Donnell and Robert Gomez. Jeff Wheeler beat Jason Grady and Chuck Buckman in heat 2 and it was Wilcox winning heat 3 over Slinkard and Hood. Jason Grady earned the pole for the feature action by winning the dash in front of O’Donnell, Martin, Wilcox, Hood and Wheeler. Hood outdueled Jason Grady for the feature honors as Slinkard ran third in front of Martin, Wilcox, female star Kaylene Verville, Gomez, Wheeler, Josh Grady, Travis Cooley, Buddy Earle and Jody Williams. Steven Bennett broke in hot laps and Steve Stone joined him as a feature scratch after the heat action. SCOA will co-sanction a July 2nd event with the USA Race Park winged sprint cars.

The 600s were split into three heat races. Hawkins won the opening heat race ahead of Adam Milsap and Dustin Carrier. Colegrove was chased to the heat 2 checkered flag by Brandon Shelton and Fisher. Ashley Robella beat Garrett Guilkey and Nick Aiuto in heat 3. The lone heat for the 250s went to Brandon Young ahead of Doug Welty and Simington. Both Aaron Edmons and Mike Plank were trailered before the heat action for the 250s. Mike Visser was an early scratch for the 600s. Even with the broken cars, the combined feature had 24 starters and Hawkins finished in front of Fisher, Colegrove, Milsap, Steven Harms, Guilkey, Jesse Vancil, Shelton and Southern California’s Robby Josett. Dustin Carrier was 10th. Grimes was the 250 winner in front of Simington, John Horton, Young and Welty.

There were 13 pure stocks and Wrightsman won heat 1 over Jeff Stafford and Munoz. McCurdy beat Kuehl and Lonnie Horgen in heat 2. Munoz drove to the feature win ahead of McCurdy, Carrajat, Center, female racer Jackie Parmeley, Lonnie Horgen, rookie T J Warner, Wrightsman, Kuehl and Aaron Rider. Young Center is fifth in points, 32 behind Munoz. The 8 bombers raced in a single heat race with Greg Leith the winner over Muller and Chuck Outlaw. Muller then posted the feature win ahead of F Outlaw, Gunn, Les Horgen, Leith and Keith Stangl. Third ranked C Outlaw is 59 points out of the point lead.

The July 2nd race will see the return of the Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modifieds and they will be joined by the super stocks, pure stocks, lady stocks and Desert Dwarf Cars.
