Aztec, NM -- Second row starter Eddie Farley dominated the Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modified feature race at Aztec Speedway on Saturday night, collecting his first feature win of 2005. E Farley is sixth in the track points. Racing a full schedule at Aztec for the first time, Albuquerque’s Richard Johnson had a season best second ahead of point leader Porter Smith and point runnerup Aaron Spangler. Smith charged from 6th to third in the final 3 laps to maintain his narrow 3 point lead on A Spangler. Jesse Baldwin led all 25 laps to win his first stock car feature of the year after earlier winning his heat race. Michael Farley came from sixth to place second and second ranked Garrett Higgins charged from 12th to capture third. Point leader Allen Bradley had to line up 24th after a tough heat race, but raced to a 5th to protect his 17 point lead on G Higgins. Fourth ranked Zach Rouse won the mini stock feature after earlier taking his heat race. Third ranked Zach Hamilton was second, point leader Joshua Brown ran third and point runnerup Brittany Tillerson settled for fourth. Ronald Mangum battled from 10th to win the hobby stock main event and became the new point leader when a backstretch crash took out Dereck Rhoden. Mangum ended the night 4 points ahead of Rhoden and 7 in front of Ronnie Cook. It was Mangum’s second straight win and Roger Nixon ran second ahead of Traci Jennings. The third was a season best for the rookie T Jennings.
There were 18 dirt modifieds split into three heat races. Chad Burson beat A Spangler in heat 1 and Johnson outraced Smith in heat 2. It was E Farley on top in heat 3 over Jeff Davis. Bill Dowdy broke early and 17 cars started the 30 lap feature with Nick Nelson and Johnson on the front row ahead of E Farley and Burson. E Farley took the lead on the opening lap and was never headed. A Spangler came from 10th to race second for awhile with a best lap of 16.19. Johnson chased Farley to the win as he was able to retake second from A Spangler. Smith started 11th and made that late charge from sixth to finish third with A Spangler settling for fourth. Kevin Brown ran fifth and 2004 champion Craig Nelson came from 16th to finish sixth ahead of Frank Powell Sr, Davis, M E Eddleman and Bucky Knipp. Derek Neil ran 16th to crush his championship hopes. Davis is third in points, 28 behind Smith and 13 in front of Neil. K Brown is fifth and E Farley sixth. Johnson ranks 8th. Nick Nelson crashed on lap 23.
The stock cars had the best car count with 25 in action. They used a four heat format and heat wins went to Lee Moss, Mark Siefried, Frank Powell Jr and J Baldwin. Beth Hartsfield and Michael Southern had front row for the feature ahead of J Baldwin, Larry Bradley and Samuel Sansoni. J Baldwin got around the front row starters on the opening lap and paced all 25 laps for his first win. Michael Farley started sixth and finished second while G Higgins came from 12th to get third. Moss ran 4th and A Bradley’s tremendous charge from 24th to 5th won the crowd’s approval. Richard Trujillo was sixth in front of Powell Jr, Matthew Higgins, Melissa Farley and Sansoni. Matthew Higgins battled back from a spin to get his spot. Sansoni had spun while second. On lap 2, Bill Cochran, Arlen Cochran and top runner Rex Higgins all crashed. Ricky Baldwin ran 16th and fell 29 points back of A Bradley, just 2 ahead of Melissa Farley and five in front of Matthew Higgins. The mini stocks had a season low nine cars. Young Courtney Nelson won heat 1 over point leader J Brown and it was Rouse on top of heat 2 ahead of Tillerson. Rouse came from sixth to win after 7th starter Hamilton had led several laps. J Brown charged from 9th to get third and Tillerson came from 8th to finish fourth. B Baldwin led early and settled for fifth ahead of David Whiteker and Courtney Nelson. J Brown is 11 points up on Tillerson, 18 in front of Hamilton and 31 ahead of Rouse. There were 12 hobby stocks and Howard Asbe beat David Phillips in heat 1. Leon Shinn won heat 2 over Mangum. Rhoden had problems in his heat and crashed with Asbe in the feature. Mangum won from 10th and fifth starter Nixon ran second. T Jennings started and finished third. Cook ran second for awhile and settled for fourth ahead of Leon Shelby, Paul Miller and Phillips. Asbe is fourth in points, 46 behind Mangum.
