Tucson, AZ -- Battling his way from fourth starting and surviving a race filled with five caution flags, Karl Tipton got his second $1000 Southwest Dirt Late Model feature win of September on Saturday night as the traveling series visited USA Race Park. Tipton earlier won his heat from the pole, but drew the second row assignment for the feature. Point leader Lonnie Parker Jr came from sixth to finish second in the other heat race and then chased Tipton home in the feature action. Southern California’s Bill Bartels made the tow east to race and finished third after starting on the pole. Parker won $500 and Bartels $400. Mark Fowler and John Cornell completed the top five in a 13 car event. Former dirt late model racer Jamie Throckmorton passed Buch McCleskey on the final lap to win the Pro Stock feature. McCleskey ran second ahead of rapidly improving Christian Fuller. The street stock feature was also decided on the final lap when point leader Ted Robinson made his winning move around Tom Campbell, who had led most fo the race. T Campbell ran second ahead of Toby Olds. Bill Walton grabbed the lead on lap 16 of the 20 lap factory stock main and scored his second win at the first year racing facility. Erick Gibson and Jason Rominger chased Walton to the checkered flag.
The 13 dirt late models were divided into a pair of heat races and pole starter Brad Williams won the first heaqt over sixth starter Parker Jr and fourth starting Cornell. Tipton had the pole for heat 2 and turned that into a win over third starting Bartels and fifth starting Fowler. The top six from the heat action redrew for their starting order in the front three rows for the feature. Bartels and Williams drew the front row ahead of Fowler, Tipton, Cornell and Parker Jr. A top contender for the series championship earlier this year, Mike Buckner has sold his entire racing operation. Tipton got a second feature win for this season with his drive from fourth as he paced Parker’s efforts from sixth at the checkered flag. The series moves to Casa Grande on Oct 1.
There were 16 pro stocks including the double division effort by T Campbell. Point leader and division dominator Brian Barsness struggled to a 14th and top runner Larry Fredrickson was 15th as McCleskey led the race until Throckmorton made his winning move on the last round. McCleskey ran second ahead of Fuller, Larry Leetch, Bob Miller, Bruce Klajda, Dennis Lickliter, Wayne Cassidy, Rod Hiestand and Gary Cheek. Like they had the previous race, Robinson and T Campbell waged a race long duel in the street stocks. On the final lap, Robinson nosed ahead and won by inches with T Campbell second ahead of Toby Olds, Billy Williams, Dan Murray, Sean Teeters, Matthew Williams, Chris Dobbs and Roy Gibson. The factory stocks filled the track with 19 starters and Walton won from 8th starting by leading the final five rounds of the 20 lapper.
