Tucson, AZ -- Red hot R C Whitwell continued his domination of the Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modified action at USA Race Park with another $500 feature win on Saturday night in his potent JetMod. Another Tucson resident had a huge night as Adam Crippen ran a solid second in his Shaw by Taylor mount while snapping Lonnie Parker Jr’s five race SWDRA dirt late model winning streak in his Rocket Chassis dirt late model. Three cars towed over from the Las Cruces-El Paso area and crowd favorite Christy Georges put her Shaw by Taylor in the third finishing spot. Track title hopeful Daniel Hutto ran fourth. Pro Stock point leader Jamie Throckmorton pulled off another clean sweep as that division drew a season high 17 cars. Daryl Fischer was second in the feature and 2005 champion Brian Barsness ran third. Barsness is second in the latest standings. Factory stock graduate Jeff Bennett was an impressive fourth after a second place heat run in a car that he purchased from Ocean Speedway racer Mike Meazell in Central California.
A huge 36 car dirt modified turnout was divided into four heat races with just the top 3 finishers in each advancing into the A Main. Crippen won the opening heat race ahead of Ron Kokot and Jeremy Huebner. Mike Brandon impressed as he fought off Texas invader Sherm Barnett and Imperial CA long tow Lance Mari to get the heat two win. This race had an ugly incident as a loose piece off another car ripped a spring out of the Brad Campbell car and it flew into the cockpit of track title hopeful Brian Clark. Clark was knocked out and his car was destroyed as he crashed into the fence. Clark suffered a broken nose and other injuries, but hopes to be back in action soon. He was just one point back of point leading Carl Trimmer going into the night. Georges won a lot of Tucson fans with her winter time success here and she showed that she hadn’t lost her touch as she won heat 3 ahead of Trimmer and Brian Gardner, who is Trimmer’s son in law. Whitwell again had a perfect night as he won heat 4 ahead of Hutto and Sean Teeters. A big 17 car field were chasing 12 transfer slots in the B Main with New Mexico’s James Fleming in action. With a fourth in his heat, young Corey Hosler Jr started up front and won the B Main ahead of pavement convert Pat Bush, Campbell, Dennis Fetter, Bruce Kaplan, Troy Hoey, Randy Harrison and Wade Simmons. Feature honors were again won by Whitwell as he slowly works his way back into track title contention after missing one May race. Crippen was flying in both of his cars on this night and he ran second ahead of Georges, Hutto, Brandon, Huebner, Trimmer, L Mari, Gardner, Campbell, Barnett and Wade Simmons.
Only 14 of the 17 pro stocks were able to start their feature run after some wild heat race action. J J Howe won heat 1 over Bennett and Chris Cheek. Throckmorton outraced Fischer and Barsness in heat 2. Throckmorton finished off his perfect night with a feature win ahead of Fischer, Barsness, Bennett, Florida transplant Larry Fredrickson, Howe, pure stock graduate John Buerger, Al Peters, Scott Steger and Butch McCleskey.
June 24 will see the factory stocks, mod lites, hornets and tuff trucks in action. The big two night show on July 1-2 will see the dirt modifieds chasing a $5000 prize and the winged sprint cars will also race both nights.
