JERRY BULLIS GETS $1200 WIN AT PRESCOTT VALLEY Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Hobby Stocks
Prescott, AZ -- Regaining the lead when George Fronsman lost a bake caliper with just four laps to run, veteran Jerry Bullis was the $1200 winner in the special 50 lap feature for the super stocks on Saturday night at Prescott Valley Raceway. Bullis also won his heat race and Fronsman settled for second in the rich event ahead of Dickie Barnes and Michael Harrison. Mark Stewart was in the right place at the right time as a lapped car forced leaders Corey Mendoza and Patrick Shumaker to tangle in the last turn of the pure stock feature. Stewart got by for the win with a disappointed Mendoza second ahead of P Shumaker and Steve Shumaker. Gaining the lead on lap 14, heat winner Brad Auringer won the hobby stock 20 lap feature ahead of early leader Fritz Croy’s Cadillac. Wendel Croy ran third.
The high dollar special for the super stocks drew 20 cars from throughout the state. Hank Logue won the first heat over Chris Draper and Harrison. Phoenix star Lonnie Foss won heat 2 over Troy Mikkelson and Fronsman. Bullis had the quickest heat race time of 154.59 seconds in his heat 3 win ahead of Joe Sarginger and Andy Wheat. Sarginger had raced here the previous week to tune up for this show. Geoff Russell blew in the heat action to leave a 19 car feature. The first 13 laps ran without a caution and Bullis was leading Foss and Fronsman. Wayne Bishop spun the only truck in the field for he lap 13 yellow. Foss had to pit from second with a flat tire. Fronsman took the lead from Bullis on this restart. The red flag fell on lap 17 as Mikkelson spun in turn 1 and got hit hard by track point leader Bill Moore Jr. Both cars suffered heavy damage, but both drivers were unhurt. Foss crashed into the front fence for a caution on lap 26. A red flag dropped on lap 34 for a fire on the Jeff Kuykendall car. Harrison got spun out of 4th on lap 42 for a yellow. The last caution fell on lap 46 and Bullis was able to chase down Fronsman for the win as the lost brake caliper left Fronsman without brakes. The track had offered $1000 for the win and a fan in the stands added another $200 to the Bullis payday. Fronsman ran second ahead of Barnes, Harrison, Bishop, Jimmy Montgomery, CAR regular Scott Starns, Wheat, James Seaton, Sarginger and Kingman’s Doug Humphries. Logue was the first car to fall out of the feature.
The pure stocks split 15 cars into a pair of heat races and Mendoza won the first ahead of Stewart and Robert Hendley. S Shumaker was a half second faster than Mendoza as he captured heat 2 ahead of Mark McWorthy and P Shumaker. All 15 cars were able to start their 20 lap feature. The yellow fell on lap 3 with three cars tangling to force Daryl Evans into the back wall. Vern Smith Jr led the first two laps, then it was Stewart out front. Stewart led just one lap before Smith retook the lead. Mendoza raced into the lead two laps later and was still leading when he and second place P Shumaker got tangled up with a lapped car in the final turn. That allowed Stewart to race by both for the win. Mendoza settled for second ahead of P Shumaker, S Shumaker, Ron Hull, Smith, Hendley, McWorthy, Wayne Rolland and Frank Geiger.
Six cars appeared in the new fun class, the hobby stocks. B Auringer won the heat over F Croy and W Croy. F Croy pushed his Cadillac into the lead in the feature ahead of the Lincoln of Ethan Engler. On lap 8, B Auringer took second from Engler. On lap 14, B Auringer had taken the top spot from F Croy. Engler blew up, filling the track with a huge smoke screen. B Auringer won with only F Croy and W Croy also running at the checkered flag.
June 24 will see the return of the IMCA Modifieds along with the sprint cars, mini stocks and lady mini stocks.
