Show Low, AZ -- Point leader Paul Banghart from Tucson snapped Eric Kelley’s two race winning streak in the Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modifieds Saturday night at Thunder Raceway. Kelley settled for a fifth place finish as veteran Wes Meeks had his best run of 2006 with a second ahead of former champion Max Sadler and second ranked Jeff Anderson. Banghart is seriously chasing the championship at the mountain track and holds a 13 point lead over Anderson and is 19 points up on Kelley. Troy Thompson broke a string of four straight 1-2 finishes by pro stocks dominators Tim Thomas and Eric Armenta with his feature win. Thompson ran several Casa Grande shows prior to Thunder Raceway opening to ready for his home track season. Thompson had finished second behind Thomas in his heat, but won the feature with Thomas second ahead of Dorsey, Charlie Mitchell and Armenta. Armenta had opened the year with two feature wins and four seconds. Armenta still holds a solid 34 point lead on Mitchell and is 38 ahead of Thomas. Dorsey is just 4 points back of Thomas. Pat Henesey swept the dwarf car action with wins in his heat and the feature. Justin Randall ran second ahead of Mike Williams. Helen Henesey, wife of the feature winner, was sixth.
There were 20 dirt modifieds split into three heat races. Meeks had a big night as he won heat 1 over Anderson and Troy Cooke. Dan Radcliffe Jr won heat 2 over Banghart and Tony Croninger. Kelley did win heat 3 ahead of Sadler and Art Scherz. Promoter Bob Livingston was a feature scratch and Banghart raced to the win ahead of Meeks, Sadler, Anderson, Kelley, back of the pack starter Brandon Garner, Troy Cooke, Scherz, Richie Davis, Radcliffe and Croninger. Sadler is fourth in points, 31 behind Banghart and 5 ahead of Davis. Croninger and T Cooke are both one point back of Davis and just 2 ahead of Radcliffe.
Nine pro stocks were divided into a pair of heat races. Thomas won the first heat over Thompson and Armenta. Mitchell got a win in heat 2 over Dustin Billingsley and Kelley King. Thompson broke the Thomas-Armenta stranglehold on the feature runs with his win ahead of Thomas, Dorsey, Mitchell, Armenta, Kathy Menchaca, King, Chris Poeling and Billingsley. A $1000 sponsorship from Mesa DriveLine is going to let the Pro Stock feature on June 24 pay $500 to win and guarantee $90 to start.
Nineteen dwarf cars were divided into three heat races and Andy Rudy won heat 1 ahead of Phoenix racer Mike Martin. H Henesey won heat 2 over Ken Sutton and Scott Gannett. P Henesey joined his wife as a heat winner in heat 3 with Mike Williams second ahead of Frank Phillips. In the feature action, it was P Henesey finishing off a perfect night ahead of Randall, Mike Williams, K C Click, Phillips, H Henesey, Larry Stewart, Sutton, Martin, Gannett and Jack Deifenbaugh.
