Lake Pleasant, AZ -- Overcoming his recent string of engine woes, Anthony Madrid drove his Flexi Flyer mount to the feature win in the Barnett Harley Davidson dirt modifieds as Canyon Raceway staged it’s 23rd birthday race on Saturday night. It was his first feature win of 2006. Madrid also earned $50 for second quick time in a special qualifying session for the class as Tom Lucas took the $100 award for quick time. Dale Jones finished second in the feature action with early leader Darin Center getting third. The super stock count was hurt by a $1200 to win show at Prescott, but Kenny Gill duplicated the A Madrid feat of turning second quick time and winning the feature race. Chris McCurdy Sr got the $100 fast time award and he finished third in the main event behind winner Gill and runnerup John Schepis. Young Cody Center drove his $ mount to the win in the pure stock main event ahead of Matt Martinez and 2005 champion Marlowe Wrightsman. Dean Riggs continued his domination of the Arizona Dwarf Car action with a feature win ahead of Mario Razzano and Fred Donaldson. Bub Bullis was disqualified for an illegal engine in the bomber action and Ian Smeltzer scored that win ahead of Scott Gunn and Josh Bullis. The husband and wife team both got wins as Lisa Smeltzer won the lady stock main event ahead of a rare Canyon appearance for Becky Madrid with Brenda Wrightsman in third.
The 18 car turnout in the dirt modifieds included Bakersfield CA long tow Buck Cox. Lucas earned the $100 quick time prize with his 16.182 lap as A Madrid ranked second ahead of Jason Noll. The main events were lined up straight up off the season points on this night to reward the track regulars and A Madrid got the dirt modified feature win ahead of Jones, D Center, Clint Fouts, John Walter, James Bond, Noll, Reeve Staley, Chuck Kuehl, Glenn Thurman and Cox. Nine super stocks were paced in time trials by the 18.335 of McCurdy Sr. Gill ranked second ahead of Schepis. Gill raced to that feature win ahead of Schepis, McCurdy Sr, Dominic Askren, Hillbilly Campbell and Crystal Reynolds. There were 23 pure stocks, but Michael Wrightsman was a feature scratch. C Center drove to a main event win ahead of Martinez, Marlowe Wrightsman, Jon Ross, C Center’s younger brother Taylon Center, Chris McCurdy Jr, Randall Alves, Mike Madill and Joesph Pino. A scratch by dash winner Larry Recl left a 14 car bomber feature. I Smeltzer won ahead of Gunn, J Bullis, Gary Fite, Les Horgen, Aaron Oachs, Glen Matkovic and Mike Bray. The 12 car dwarf turnout was split into a pair of dashes. Scott Winger and Kelvin Spaght both won dash events. Riggs was the dwarf car feature winner over Razzano, Donaldson, Dan Yirku, Jeff Adams, Melvin Spaght, Jim Ward and John Saunders. Alex Stafford scratched to leave 8 entries in the lady stocks. L Smeltzer joined her husband in the winner’s circle with another feature triumph ahead of B Madrid, Brenda Wrightsman, Ronda Gill, Charlotte Rider and Chery Rider.
June 24 will see the ASCA wingless 360 sprint cars in action along with the dirt modifieds, bombers and mini sprints.
