Fernley, NV -- Getting his first feature win in nearly two years, 71 year old, seven time BCRA Midget champion Floyd Alvis won Saturday night’s BCRA Midget main event at Reno Fernley Raceway. He was chased to the checkered flag by 16 year old rookie Darrin Bolton with Rick Haugh getting third. Nevada State Title hopeful Bill Smith III had a big night in the IMCA Modifieds, winning both his heat and the feature. Point leader Steve McGee ran second ahead of Rich Hill and Pro Stock graduate John Hood. Joe Specchio Jr won the pro stock feature for a second straight week with Jake Holland second ahead of Scott Deutsch and Jim Smith. A second in his heat kept Vuki Wilson from perfection in the dwarf car action as Billie Canham ran second in the feature ahead of Bill Brown and Jeff Shurley. V Wilson ended up as the new point leader as former leader Reece Wilson struggled to a 12th. Jim Turner won the open wheel 318 feature to stay very close to point leading Shawn Natendstedt. Natenstedt won the heat race where Turner ran third and then placed third in the feature run behind Keith Walsh.
The BCRA Midgets normally time trial, but used a point average system for the lineups in this five division show. Only 12 cars appeared and Gary Dickenson won the opening heat race over David Prickett and Tony Boscacci. Rob Russell beat Travis Berryhill and Alvis in heat 2. Russell took the dash honors over Berryhill and Dickenson. Russell had the pole for the feature in the Thurston Ford and he raced into the lead over Prickett and Dickenson. 2005 champion John Sarale fell out early. Alvis fell back to 7th on the start, but rebounded to fifth on lap 2 and fourth on lap 3. Berryhill raced into second on lap 4. Alvis took third from Prickett and then drove around Berryhill for second. Leader Russell was using a high line while Alvis was hugging the bottom and reeling him in. Russell spun high in turn 4 on lap 9 and Alvis was out front the rest of the way. Dickenson and Dan Parker got collected up in the Russell spin. On lap 11, second place duelers Prickett and Berryhill tangled. Prickett spun out the pit entrance and was blackflagged when he returned to the track for speeding through the pit area. Berryhill also drew a race ending black flag for rough driving. Bolton was now second ahead of Boscacci, R Haugh and Parker. R Haugh got around Boscacci for third and then both Parker and Dickenson dropped him out of the top five. Russell raced his way back to fifth only to pull into the infield at the white flag when he lost his brakes. Alvis raced to the win ahead of Bolton, R Haugh, Parker, Dickenson, Boscacci and John Haugh with 8th place finisher Scott Nail one lap down. A Lakeport race on July 1 became the next BCRA Midget race when their June 24 Marysville date was cancelled by that track. The vintage midgets were also in action and Ron Dunn won the feature ahead of Pete Bray and heat winner Michael Luddon. Luddon beat Dunn and Bray in the heat race. Track manager Chris Coclich got to get back behind the wheel and he ran fifth in both the heat and feature behind Paul Ferrera.
16 IMCA Modifieds were divided into a pair of heat races and rookie Nick Reid won heat 1 over Hill and Joe Specchio III. B Smith won heat 2 ahead of Hood and Russ Cazier. Long time track dominator Robert Miller returned, but got fifth in his heat and drew a black flag in the feature. B Smith finished off his perfect night with a feature win over McGee, Hill, Hood, Specchio III, Steve Evenson, David Ellsworth. Double division racer Natenstedt ran 8th ahead of Shawn Marlow and Bob Neese.
Seventeen pro stocks were divided into two heat races and Roy Peterson drove his truck to a win in heat 1 over California’s Brett Youngman and point leader Specchio Jr. Travis Peterson won heat 2 over Reno’s Scott Deutsch and point runnerup Jim Smith. Specchio Jr made it three feature wins, one third and one fourth in 2006 as he won the main for a second straight week ahead of Holland, Deutsch, J Smith, California veteran racer Pat Couch, Nevada veteran Gary Nevers, Mike Prien, Gilbert Dixon, Mike McMordie and Youngman. There were 15 dwarf cars including both of the Pro Stock racing Petersons. Incoming point leader R Wilson did win heat 1 over Brown and Canham. Ron Sampson edged out V Wilson in heat 2 with Shurley third. Billie Wilson drew a feature black flag and V Wilson was the main event winner over Canham, Brown, Shurley, California long tow Charlie Correia, T Peterson, Sampson and Fred Lumen. Even with a ten car turnout, the Open Wheel 318 class ran a single heat race. Natenstedt won the heat race over 2005 champion Rick Looney and Turner. Turner then took feature honors with Walsh second ahead of Natenstedt, Larry Silas, R Looney, Richard Rabe, John Scherer and Chris Lumsden.
